I dont think references are that much important if you want to get into some biggies its your knowledge which make the difference.

As far as I know, you need to have proper reference to get into a big-shot MNC. You must have the proper experience that matches the job profile. In a nutshell, a little bit of reference and a huge amount of luck.

Your experience and skills are more important to jump into good companies. Yours marks may not play a role once you got some experience. Some companies do ask you for first class. References may require to know if a company have vacancy and your reference good will may work. But your experience and skills are more important.

Understand the key areas of Java/J2EE and mention it in your resume where applicable . Things like

-- Where u used design patterns, OO design concepts, UML etc
-- where u fixed performance/memory/transactional issues
-- your experience or familiarity with emerging technologies like Hibernate, Spring (IoC), etc.
-- Exaggerating a bit in your resume is okay provided you have the confidence that you can perform well in your interview, but do not lie. Your Resume matters a lot.
