When you get the object back from Hibernate, call the getClass() method and see how it is being returned.

A possibility is that the java.util.Date is having the toString method invoked, the result of the toString method is formatted appropriately by Hibernate and stored as a java.sql.Date. Then, when it comes back, it isn't coming back as the same type.

java.util.Date objects are so yesterday. Every database is in love with java.sql.Date.

Cheers!

No. Hibernate uses PreparedStatements by default. The value of the date is being bound to a parameters, not inserted as a String.

That aside, I don't see any Hibernate code being called in the stack trace you posted. How do you map your date field?
