hi friends ,

i am a fresher and have two months left for my btech to get completed - i have got job offers from accenture and infosys . i am from electronics and communication background and have a cgp of 8.9 with many good projects

i have cleared scjp a week back with 70% marks

i need to know how much consideration would accenture or infosys give to my this qualification - whether it would give or not .

i have a decent cgp - what do you recommend - should i stay with the industry for 1-2 years and then go for my MS in some good university or should i stick to industry and carry on with it.

actually being from ece background has put me in a dilemna . is there a good field where may be after a year or so both my ece skills and software industry experience would come handy.

i do not have many people around me to guide so any suggestion is most welcome

Nandan,

It is very difficult to get back into studies after spending a couple of years in the industry - the lethargy sets in hard and fast. Plus, you get used to earning good money and believe there is no good reason to make additional effort in studies.

A typical career span is around 40 years. You will more than make up for the initial two years that you invest in getting a masters degree.

hi,

well maybe yes , infact many people told me the same thing but i also know about a few who actually left their jobs .

all i am asking is that - in case i am left with the stamina to further pursue my studies - should i go or not or just be with the industry

please suggest

Hi,

U can accept the offer. But sometimes,i am not saying always there might be project which need something extra from u that means more working hours and all that stuff. u might not get time to study.

There are some eg,some of my batchmates done like this. 2 years in infy and then he went for MBA.

Basically u have to maintain the balance and project depents upon luck

I think one should complete education first if they don't have money constraints. Doing job & studies might sometimes end up doing injustice to one. Once you in job we run behind money and career. If we have strong education, oportunities will come to you. Just my opinion. Goodluck.

I recommend you to stay away from infosys and accenture ( IT jobs). Try to get a job into embedded , semiconductor or telecom domain ( engineering field ). As you have a background in ECE .

Hi,

I feel you should complete your higher studies then go for job.
Moreover if you want to do your ms then why should you go for work that to for 2 years?Ofcourse in companies like Infosys you can make good money and that can definitely help you in pursuing your studies further, just in case if you have any financial problems. But if you are planning to do ms in electronics later, then you need not head towards software industry.

As the other friends said, once you start working ,you normally lose that energy or will to do studies again as you were in college days. But defy nothing is impossible ,so its all finally upto you.

If you choose MS, you will loose nearly 2 years real time experience. Hence think about that.

If your inner voice is pushing you to go for a higher qualification, go for it. You need not worry about 2 years of 'experience'. one never knows what's in store.

As you are not from a 'elite' university, you will be limited by the HR heads to some dumb maintanence and testing work. Go for MS and have a crack at better life and work.

Hi friends ,

thanks for the advice but i think i did not make myself clear in one aspect - in case i join a software firm - then i think i would like to go for my MS in some field which would have a direct relation with the kind of work i would have done before - that is i do not intend to go for MS and then start altogether again

eg if i join accenture - as i have cleared SCJP i may get J2ee - then i can go in for my ms in some related field.

What would be fields where i can go for specialisation . if you can recommend some branch where my ece knowledge can also come handy - i have heard that fields like CAD , EMBEDDED etc.If there is such a field great else i may go for some IT related field only.

Guys , actually i am still not sure - i need some advice and if you know someone - some experience .Please help me out.

Nandan,

In this field, whatever you study, you will find it very difficult to find a job that leverages or builds upon your specialization.

I view extra qualifications as a door opener. It will get you called in for a few more interviews. (for the dinosaur employers, it may also be a pre-requisite for promotions to certain positions) But beyond that, you are on your on. No qualification can prepare you for your job.

Hi Nandan,

Getting a job as fresher is difficult in India(not sure about other countries). So I suggest go for job and may be after working 1 year or 2 years you can go for higher studies. It is easier for you to get job after your higher studies if you already have some experience.

Good luck
