Hi Ranchers,

I got offer from TCS pune. The salary is not much as compare to my current CTC. I am having around 7.5 yr exp and currently I am drawing 8.25 lakh per annum. The TCS offer is 8.5

I have been offered a job in TCS Center of Excellence (COE) division.

I am not sure whether to accept it or not.

It would be really great if fellow ranchers can advise me on the following points:

1. Do you think the Offer CTC is good or there is scope for further bargain.
2. Does any one have any idea regarding the kind of job TCS does in COE divison. If there any chance for On-site?
3. If there are no chance for On-site in COE, can any one suggest what other division within TCS I can opt for.

I do have a location perference. I am not opting for outside Pune.

Early response on the same will be great.

Regards
Naveen Garg

Hi James,

Thanks for the response.

The main reason I am considering for a change is I am not getting technical growth in my current job. The opportunity are very less. In my opinion the my is not everything there has to a job satisfication.

Being a technology guy, I am seeking growth in that direction and I believe TCS can give me that.

Regards
Naveen

Naveen,

Well you statements seems to be some-how ambigious, Please don't mind, Let me tell you, yes ofcourse offer is not good as you deserve, but one side you are talking about Onsite and in another post you are talking about Technology.

I must clear you, you might not get much onsite at TCS Pune, because it's a COE (Center of Excellence) center, TCS develop it's own tools which are really helpfull to build up your mind in Technological way.

But yes that's true that you will learn a lot in TCS Pune COE. SO make up your mind whether you want technical growth or you want money.

That's all from my side. Now it's upto you.
I hope I make picture very clear infront of you.

Hi Ankur,

Thanks for clarifying things regarding COE in TCS Pune. Do you know how is the hierarchy in TCS COE?

Yes, I do want technical growth as compare to financial gain. Since I am already getting fairly good salary if not the heavy one, money take a second perference.

In TCS last sunday, I had gone through four round of technical interview and after that I have received the offer. So I think I do deserve a decent hike.

The only reason I had asked about the onsite chance so that if I am not getting a decent hike in salary I can compansate it with onsite thing.

Let me know if you can give me more insight regarding COE in TCS?

Regards
Naveen Garg

Dear Naveen,

Please let me know in detail what you really want to know about TCS COE.

As I said, it's true that you will definately going to gain a very good technical growth in TCS COE (Center of Excellence). But as these technologies are inhouse Application Tools used in TCS. So that's why you might not get Onsite Chances.

Yes you are correct, this might change in near future. But I was talking about current condition, when you are working in TCS Pune COE. Else otherwise it's highly possible to go Onsite in TCS. And then you can easily gain high amount of money.

Naveen,
after having 7.5yrs of exp. you should also look at getting domain knowledge apart from technical knowledge, at TCS TCOE you may be doing some sort of Technical coding or design but you may not work on any client project, you might be working on developing some api or internal framework but not work on any client project.
so i think that you will only get some technical knowledge but will miss out on client interaction, onsite, domain knowledge etc.
but one thing is clear the salary of 8.5L in TCS is at higher end, they do not pay salary more than this.

choice is yours

Cheers
Rajesh

First of all, you've got a very good offer on TCS scale.

Now, what Centre of Excellence it is? Oracle Apps? Java? .NET? What?

TCS has COEs in nearly all its centres nowadays

Believe me, the term COE is acutally simply "nothing".

At your experience level, if you are specially joining in COE purpose, you'll have following responsibilities (may differ depending on which COE).

* Writing proposals for new projects on your COE field
* Giving/Organizing training to new recruits on this field.
* Undertake project management jobs

Usually, at your experience level, people don't do "coding" in TCS. Depending on requirement, you may have onsite chances BUT, if you are offerred a very high position in COE role, you'll find it difficult to get release from the project.

Onsite is often a matter of luck (and some politics in higher level), so quite difficult to predict on that.

However, Pune is the TCS's best R&D centre - TCS's most PhD holders actually work in Pune.

If you are happy with salary and not dying for onsite immediatly, then I suggest you take this offer.

Dear Ankur,

Many thanks for your help. Even I also believe the same.

-------

Dear Mr. Rajesh

Thanks for your valuable suggestions. Well I do have functional knowledge about Banking, Sales, Purchase, Manufacturing, EDI, Logistics etc. I had worked on different technology (JAVA/C/C++/VB/COBOL to name a few) along with various domain for US/UK/Europe/Aus based client. So I don't see a problem there as well. To tell you frankly I do love coding even after having so many years. The main reason I was looking for technical growth is because in my current job I don't see it and I don't think that my current company will provide me that kind of growth. The work that I am doing right now is the best that my company can offer me and for me this does not have any challanges.

I hope this will clarify my point.

-----------

Dear Mr. Movilogo,

The TCS COE I am talking about is related Java as that is my current strength.

------------

Anyway many thanks from all of you.

Kind Regards
Naveen K Garg
