Hi
I was a regular silent visitor of this forum till the new posting guidelines came into place. I would like to ask the Bartenders & Sheriff's why have they decided to come up with such restrictions? Earlier we were able to compare two companies and then decide on joining one. But as specific names are now banned, we are not able to judge as no specific information is available.

There's a lot of salary negotiation in Indian companies and hence I feel that we need to know what's happening in the job market.

I think that the forum should be reverted back to it's original self.

This post just reflects my thoughts and i do not wish to offend anybody. Again the moderators are free to lock this if they think I've violated something.

Belongs in the Javaranch forum, not Job Discussion.

For reference, the guidelines are available here.

Did you read the thread above and the motivations listed? This is a decision we were not happy to make and has caused us issues since implementing it, but we still believe it is necessary. Did you have anything specific to address regarding our motivations?

I agree too ...

Has there been any case where a public forum was in trouble over the comments posted by its members ?

Motivation
The reasons for this policy are as follows:
1) It devalues the forum. Discussion of specific companies are of use to a tiny number of people and so much of the forum becomes irrelevant to most people. As one moderator put it, this is Job Discussion, not Company Discussion.

But that tiny number of people will praise you for a long time to come.

2) These discussions cause people to violate the "Be Nice" rule far too often.

It's an open forum right? Furthur, if anyone is "Not Nice" then, that thread or user can be blocked, right?

3) These discussions are likely to expose JavaRanch to legal issues.

You can always add a disclaimer.

Believe me, I used to visit the Jobs Discussion forum more than anything on JR. But now, it has lost all of its spark (or 'masala' in Hindi for my fellow Indians)

The restriction is like discussing about cars in general , but being forbidden from discussing specific companies/models ....

Discussing about movies and its genres , but not being able to give movie names as example ...

Aaagrrhhh .... feels so stifling

Even i feel it should be allowed to discuss company names.

That's not really a reason though, is it? Making a small group happy is a fine aim, but not a reason in itself.

It's an open forum right?
What made you think this was open? It is a private forum owned by Paul. He lets the rest of us use it.

Furthur, if anyone is "Not Nice" then, that thread or user can be blocked, right?
Or we can make it easier to manage. We allow individuals many chances to improve before cutting them off. This is considered a last resort, and a failure on our part to come to a solution. A site that deletes users too eagerly is clean, but quiet.

You can always add a disclaimer.
This is a cover-up, not a solution. There is no single step other than the one taken that protects the site from legal issues. Keep in mind you're thinking of real legal issues, although even just the threat of one would be really annoying. No thanks.

The suggestion has also been made that if this is such a valuable resource, you would be welcome to start a site which provided such a resource and allowed these discussions.

Hi David,

As earlier, no offense meant, but can we have a statistic of the number of posts + number of active users visiting the Jobs discussion forum?

If a comparision is made, then I think the users have decreased after the new guidelines were introduced.

It is a "Job discussion" forum not a "Company Discussion" forum.
Most of the people who stopped using it were there to discuss companies.
The people that remain, have been having good discussions about workplace issues without comparing specific companies by name.

So.. yes, the volume has gone down but the quality of the conversations remains very high.

Several people have gone off and started their own groups for discussing companies but none of them have really had any traction.
If here is really a need, don't you think one of those sites would have taken off and become really popular?

Are there any new points to be made? It occurs to me that we are once again repeating old conversations held when we first implemented the posting guidelines.

Ranch is a great website. It is helpful to so many. Lets not cause problems. So lets post some other solution and if there is no solution then the new posting guidelines are ok.

I am not aware of one, and while in practice I am against site-leaches (using a popular site to drive traffic to your own) I would be open to suggesting this to other staff - in the short term at least - if an acceptable site could be found.

If you had your own java site with no visitors, if you came to the Ranch just to drive traffic to your site, all you would be doing is stealing traffic, or leeching.
