I am needing to keep information about available hosts and listening ports in a configurable place so that when my application starts, it can query to find out which hosts are available, and what port each of those hosts is listening on. I am planning to use the Windows 2000 registry for this purpose. Is there a COM wrapper necessary to do this with Windows 2000, or does Java (by some miracle) have classes for this purpose? Is there a better way to do this altogether?
You may want to consider using Java Native Methods to access the registry functions in the Windows API. A good example of doing this can be found in Chapter 11 of the Core Java Volume II - Advanced Features book by Horstmann. If you are lucky like me, a local Barnes and Noble bookstore will have this book on its shelves so you can check this out before buying it.
