I'm bored and it's early, so I'll take a stab at responding here.
I'm probably a little unique when it comes to folks in the software field now - I actually don't have a degree. I was an astronomy/astrophysics major in college, and just so happened to be "nudged" into web design just as the dot-com boom happened. I ended up leaving college (
not intentionally - my wife pointed out that I didn't really drop out) to work for a succession of web-design firms, and transitioned into being a
Java programmer. In lieu of my degree, I've been fairly diligent with keeping up on the latest technologies and getting certified as I go along (hence the signature I sport). Yes, I am the �bergeek.
Currently, I'm working for a government contractor, and have been with the same firm for about six years. My duties include modification of a COTS package and creation of code in Java and other languages for client tasks. It's a fairly good job, and intellectually stimulating work, moreso than I could say for the branch of astronomy I'd been falling into...
