I am curious as to what kinds of careers many of you are active in. I am sure many of you are programmers and/or students, but I am curious as to what companies you all work for and what your specific duties are. Also, what degrees have you earned (tech or otherwise)? I am curious about what is currently out there for people with programming backgrounds. A huge thanks to anyone who responds.

I'm bored and it's early, so I'll take a stab at responding here.

I'm probably a little unique when it comes to folks in the software field now - I actually don't have a degree. I was an astronomy/astrophysics major in college, and just so happened to be "nudged" into web design just as the dot-com boom happened. I ended up leaving college (not intentionally - my wife pointed out that I didn't really drop out) to work for a succession of web-design firms, and transitioned into being a Java programmer. In lieu of my degree, I've been fairly diligent with keeping up on the latest technologies and getting certified as I go along (hence the signature I sport). Yes, I am the bergeek.

Currently, I'm working for a government contractor, and have been with the same firm for about six years. My duties include modification of a COTS package and creation of code in Java and other languages for client tasks. It's a fairly good job, and intellectually stimulating work, moreso than I could say for the branch of astronomy I'd been falling into...

I've done my undergraduate in Computer Science and I've been working as a java developer for the last 2 years or so since my graduation.
I am currently in the process of quitting my job to study my Masters degree in computer science, probably from some good university in new york city.
My other hobbies include chasing pretty skirts, watch old tv shows and following politics in a desperate attempt to save the world .
