Hello Ranchers,

I just got to know about a website that gives the hitcount and statistics of another website by passing its url.

The information about JavaRanch can be found it here.

Courtesy: I have found it in TSDN and especially in this thread.

Soon after seeing it for thescripts.com, i was curious to know about our JavaRanch site and saw it and just wanted to share with you all.

Kindly Ignore if its already known to all Ranchers.

They have a search toolbar which (somehow) they get users to install. Once installed, it records every URL you visit and sends it to Alexa's servers (yikes!) Thus Alexa's statistics represent the browsing habits of only that group of people who would install a facocta doodad like this on their computers.

In case anyone reading this is curious, the real numbers are at extreme tracking.

Impressive numbers on the real site.... wow.

Does JavaRanch disclose its architecture? I'm just curious how many servers, which DB, etc. I can understand that it might not for security reasons.

We won't disclose the architecture because it's embarrassing

Architecture? I bring in cardboard boxes, and EFH has a staple gun.

Duct tape is now coming in other colors. Can we replace the drab gray?

Unfortunately we are stuck with this proprietary solution (is this what vendor lock-in is). Our existing framework (assorted wood and metal poles) does not support a simple migration to another vendor (of colored tape).

The Saloon runs on Apache, while the Java servers are a mix of Orion and Tomcat. That's not really giving anything away, since the HTTP headers show that information.

What we have said in the past -so it's not really a secret any more- is that where everybody seems to assume there should be a database, there isn't one - just many, many files.

For other purposes we do use a DB, and then it's PostgreSQL.

Don't go bashing duct tape - if it's good enough for NASA, it's good enough for me!

SlashDot's CmdrTaco bashing Alexa. Explains the same stuff I say above, but takes a lot longer to do it
