Find a barcode reader, read the manufacturer's name on it, and search their website for "white papers" or "technical details." That might help for a start.

Sounds exciting ! Students will swipe the card over a barcode reader and it records the swipe into a db for that date.

Sounds like you'll have to find a barcode reader that has components you can call via JNI or that call you via some remote protocol like sockets or JMS. Read up on those readers and see if any of them talk about Java developer kits.

A lot of barcode readers, they just emulate a keyboard. So to read a scan you would just read from System.in. However the advice already given still applies: read the technical specs for the barcode reader you plan to use.
