I need some suggestions for my friend who is looking for job in India. Currently he is working in Chennai and getting 8.5Lac INR per annum plus around 1Lac in various bonuses and peformance driven pays

He got an offer from a UK based banking firm in Pune. The offer is of 12 Lac per annum. He has heard that compared to Chennai cost of Pune is high? How far is that true. What is the average or median salary for a 8 year exp professional in Pune?

Well what I know is completely different and almost reverse. In chennai cost of living id high but not more that PUNE as I heard that most of the companies are situated in the outskirts of PUNE. Moreover I dont know about your friend but I like PUNE better as compared to Chennai due to following reasons:
1. Language Problem
2. Humidity (cant tolerate it)

Well these were my thoughts. I dont know about your friend.

So your friend wants to know which city is more suitable or want to 'negotiate' the offered salary *after* understanding the differences?

Pune is cheaper than, say Hyderabad or B'lore. Since Pune companies are not located at the same place, the real estate prices have not sky rocketed (like at Hi-tec/Madhapur in Hyderabad). Also Pune is blessed with pleasant climate and has cosmopolitian culture.

Chennai was once a relatively not so expensive place to live, but things have become worse now..If you are living in rented house then the cost of living in chennai will be more than the cost in bangalore..I don't know about Pune since I have never been to Pune.

A seriously social churning is happening.Lots of middle class families had to move out of the core city areas where they had resided for decades and seek a roof in the suburbs.Because house rentals had shot up and a new set of people can now afford to pay fancy rents for accommodation in the city.Real estate prices have risen sharply and this has had a cascading effect on the housing rents..Housing rentals have doubled and tripled in lots of places...In Bangalore, I have options to buy a 2-bedroom apartment for less than 30 lakhs in areas like Marthahalli, old Madras Road,Banaswadi etc.but in Chennai I cannot think about a similar flat less than 50 lakhs in the city.I would suggest your friend to move over to Pune...

In my opinion all cities cost of living became almost all same or little difference. Some time back Hyderabad, Chennai cities cost of living is less but now the rents increased in every city and the cost of living became same or less difference. So take a decision based on offer, other factors and not based on cost of living in a city.

I agree.Indiain cities are more or less in the same mess in terms of cost of living, traffic, food etc.Still to compare good point on Pune/Chennai-
Pune-good weather,cosmopolitan
Chennai-distinct culture,metro
Its individual decision what he/she prefers. In terms total IT companies, Chennai might surpass Pune.

please buy my thing and then I'll have more money:
