Geo-mapping tool for Java

I hope this is the appropriate forum...

I'm looking for a tool/library to plot lat/long data onto a map using Java. The data (NMEA-0183) is gathered from a GPS unit I have and I would like to be able to plot on a map the track taken.

I'm new to geo-mapping and I'm not sure what tools exist. What experiences have others had? I'm open to either a Swing or web based user interface (it's an open-source project so I would like to stay away from high-cost commercial solutions).

Any information is appreciated.

One package I've been meaning to check out is GeoTools. Maybe you can take a look at it and tell us if it might be suitable for your purposes?
