I have installed JSDK2.1 on my computer. But when i am trying to run the server by typing startserver at the C:\jsdk2.1 prompt in a DOS window, instead of opening another window to indicate that the server is running, it just opens a window and immediately closes it without starting the server.A DOS window just appears on the screen and disappears within a fraction of second.
Can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem?

Hai vandana,
Jsdk is used for servlet development.but along with it we need a web server like javawebserver or tomcat(preferred).
Install either of these on your system. Then run startup inside the webserver. Now new window is displayed with info that server is running.
any queries, plz get back to me.
regards,
kichu

i dont think so kichu .... you do not require tomcat or javawebserver .... jsdk2.1 is more than enough to test ur servlets
the problem might be that it does not find the java tools in the bin folder because ur path might not be set
hope that helps

The main problem is that JSDK 2.1 is really obsolete. The Servlet API currently stands at a draft of version 2.3, and version 2.2 in particular made a lot of sweeping changes.
I would not recommend learning version 2.0 or 2.1 of the API. As others have suggested, there are so many good, up to date, servlet containers available without cost (Tomcat from jarkarta.apache.org, Resin from www.caucho.com, Jetty from www.mortbay.com and so on) that it seems silly to spend the time and effort to learn an obsolete system.

Hi Kichu,Samith and Frank,
Thank you for your replies. But am very sorry to say that it didn;t help.
I do also have JavaWebServer on my computer but i don't think that has got something to do with JSDK2.1.As far as my knowledge goes,JSDK2.1 can act as a server with JDK1.2.2.
But the most strange thing is it was working absolutely fine till day b4 yesterday and suddenly when i started the server yesterday, the console window doesn't appear, instead it just flashes once and disappears immediately.
Can anyone please help me with this?I have to do my project and am stuck now beacuse of this problem...
Thank you.

You will have to modify the batch file that you start the program with so that the window will stay open and you can see the error messages. There are so many possible causes that we can't do much without the error message.

I know that. But the server is not even starting, leave alone the error messages. What do i do to start the server and also to keep the console window stay still without disappearing.

Hai vandana,
What we are trying to say is that stop using jsdk and start using tomcat for your servlet development.
if u want u can install tomcat from==>
http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat/release/v3.2.1/bin/
install jakarta-tomcat-3.2.1 for your windows machine..
If u have any installation problems plz do get back to me.
email:kichuhere@rediffmail.com
bye,
kichu

Hi!,
To run your servlet application you need to start the servletrunner.exe paced in your c:/jsdk2.1/bin directory.
Just go to this directory in the command prompt
you'll see
c:/jsdk2.1/bin>
type..
servletrunner
press "enter"
it will start a built in test web server implementation which support all of the specifications of JSDK2.1.
Now it will run on default port 8080.
Your application should be in the c:/jsdk2.1/bin directory only.
point your browser to
http://localhost:8080/<servlet-name>
Here you go.

Hi Vikinsa,
Thanks for ur help. But i could configure the problem and now i can run the server perfectly without any problem. All that i had to do was reinstall the JDK1.2.2 and JSDK2.1 and that solved the problem.
Thank you very much.
