To learn the rules for where servlet classes go, study the examples and documentation provided with Tomcat. Especially study the web.xml file in the webapps\examples\WEB-INF directory. For the definitive API on organizing web applications download the Servlet 2.2 API from java.sun.com

hi,
mr brogden if tmcat has given some samples to test and some work and some do not then they must have told it the document itself.
how can a new user like me understand what the problem ca be .

Almost every time I have installed a Tomcat version, the examples have all worked if I followed the documentation. The one time I had trouble, it was due to a left-over JAR file from an early version of Java Servlet Development Kit.
Which operating system are you running on?
Which SDK do you have on your system?
Have you ever installed a previous version of Tomcat or the Java Servlet Development Kit from Sun?
