Does anyone else find Web Hosting companies that offer JSP/Servlet Support completely outragiously priced?
http://www.servlets.net/index.html
http://www.mmaweb.net/hosting.html
To name a couple hits on Google.
I did find this one
http://www.imhosted.com/advanced_plans.shtml
Which seems to be about the best. It actually is not a bad deal.
But why do companies charge so much for JSP/Servlet enabled web hosting? Especially with all the open source software they get to use.
I realise that these companies will still pay license fees for support of the open source software like Tomcat, Apache, etc. But it can't possibly be as much as Windows, IIS, etc.
Anyone care to shed some light on this?

Gregg
I've been looking too and have found this one:
http://www.digitalspace.net/webhosting/
Very reasonably priced, but it looks like you don't get as much with it. I'm going to look at the one you posted above and maybe sign up for that one.

That not too bad Dave. Thanks. I will never pay over $15/month for any web hosting plan. And it's getting to where $15 seems a bit much, but for Servlet/JSP support, looks like we don't have much of a choice.

I read a bit more about the imHosting that you put up and it seems like moe of a reputable company and they do have better offers (more stuff!!) included. I sent them off an email with my standard questions:
Can I set up multiple web-apps? Each with their own WEB-INF directory and web.xml file?
Can I write to my local directories through a Java program?
Can I use different forms of authentication (basic, form, and/or digest) within my apps?
Can I upload WAR files? If so where do I put them if I don't have access to the webapps root directory?
Can I define error pages within my web.xml file(s)?
Can I set up web services? Do you have the proper XML APIs installed on the servers?
Is there a limit to the number of tables I can set up in the mySQL databases? What about limits to the size of the tables?
Any other good questions I missed?
At this point the answer to these from Digital space was pretty limited so if the response from im is better I might go with them. I'll let you know what they say.

I can't think of anything you missed right now. I will let you know if I think of some. Good, let me know what their response is. We may end up giving them a lot of Rancher business.
Oh, do they have a referel program?

Good one Bear. I think it is most likely shared but I'll ask, unless they answer it in their response to my other questions.
Yea, Gregg they do have a referral program. $30 for a referral. If we both decide on them then you can sign up through me or I'll sign up through you and we can split it!!!

Their site is deadly slow. I hope their hosted sites run faster.
The deal does look very good.

I was needing a new Host for Embedded Thought anyway, and it doesn't need JSP/Servlet Support, so I went ahead and signed up for thier $9.95 package. My other Hosting Contract was up in January anyway.
After it is setup I will let everyone know and give you some feedback on managing your site with them.
Also, once it is up, you can go to my site and see if it is as fast as you all would like. Although my site is primarily text and straight HTML right now. But it looks nice.
I'll keep everyone updated via this thread.

I been using digitalspace/frogspace for over a few years now. They are rock solid. All my email is through them. Of course I havent used the advanced features but I still have access to them at only $5 per month!
Great host. Tech support is LIVE during the day. My questions are usually answered in less than 1 minute.
They are adding new features all the time. I am waiting on the EJB server whenever they get around to offering that.
I think the BW used to be a little on the tight side back in the day, but I havent tested it recently. Heck its just for my learning so its cool with me. I actually got my own Linux box in the basement now so I am doing more learning in-house...
I recommend www.digitalspace.net
My site is www.rigidsoftware.com

Good, I'll look for it when I'm ready to order - hopefully tomorrow. So what is it like to use? Is the control panel easy? Any other comments - I realize it's only been a day....

Control Panel is awesome. Really rich, fast, and nice. You can do everything from the Control Panel. Statistics, Subdomains, CGI, Email, EVERYTHING. I am really digging them so far.

I looked for a long time and found that most java hosting is way expensive. $300-$400/year.
I am using netendeavors.net. They offer ssh and have good tech support. Java 1.4 on linux using Tomcat manager (shared tomcat) with apache http server. You can set up subdomains through cpanel.
You don't get your own tomcat, but if you need special configuration of server.xml, you can ask.

2 java hosting companies I've been using are pretty decent and not expensive at all...and they both offer tomcat 4.1 with jdk 1.4.
imagineIS
kgb internet solutions
imagineIS is $10 a month for a private jvm.
kgb is $20 canadian a month for a private jvm as well.
I just thought I'd throw these 2 in the mix as well.

Seems like this is starting to turn into a "Find Servlet Hosting" thread rather than how it started.
All the Hosting Companies that have been mentioned, with the exception of ImHost which I accedently stumbled on, are still, in my opinion, not worth the money. The main reason is the price compared to the Web Space you get.
Sure, $6 a month is cheap, but for 10 MB of space? That is rediculous.
MYCGISERVER is the slowest site I have ever seen.
I would suggest that if you can't beat 350 MB for $14 a month including JSP/Servlet support, MySQL DB, PHP, etc, then don't bother posting a link to the hosting company.
Not trying to be mean, just trying to find the BEST, not just what is available. I know what is available.
Thanks.
