I finally did something smart I searched google for "free anti-virus" and found out there are some. I downloaded one called AVG and as soon as i rebooted(part of installation procedure) I knew i had problems. I got the same error I have been getting anytime i have an autoexec.bat in my root. so i rebooted from mystartup disk, deleted autoexec so windows could start(the program had created one) and immediately discovered i was infected with I-worm/hybris. furthermore i had 20 infected files(some were backdoor.doly) it could only fix 6 of them so i have to delete/replace 14 of them. I like the AVG software but it seems to slow down my internet connection real bad(actually i guess it is slowing down my whole system) is my only complaint. anyway as soon as i read more about this worm(or whatever it is) I can do more to fix my system. unfortunately it asked me if i wanted to move the first infected file to a like quarantine area or something. i said yes and windows couldnt comply since it was c:\windows\system\wsock32.dll and after that it didnt list the other infected files so I'm going to have to run a full scan again
yes there are people out there who are truly evil. I know that now.
if anyone wants to e-mail me a copy of wsock32.dll(it's for win98) my email is rmtwede@hotmail.com
Of course it is possible this is not really a file that windows needs so if you have win98 and you dont have this file in the c:\windows\system directory please let me know and I can then just delete it.

Randall, you seem to have more computer problems than most people. Do you keep yours on an unusual diet?

thanks peter
david it is a combination of several things. being online 24/7 for a year, having a firewall and antivirus only part of the time, and of course downloading from the wrong person. well i have firewall and antivirus now and both were free

wouldn't it just be easier to format and reinstall everything? a bit of a pain to reinstall if you don't have the discs, but we just did ours and it helped tremendously. still don't know what was wrong with it before, but could've been a virus as it was getting worse and worse all the time. at one point we tried to defrag hoping it'd help and somehow the puter managed to delete all the drivers my friend's explanation is that it got clusterfu*$ed and went crazy, but i dunno

I have a firewall(but only because i share my connect with several boxes) but have never had any anti-virus. Slows the system down way to much and i dont find any benefit to it at all. If there is a problem, reformat.
