Today's office debate: Was Jeri Ryan introduced to ST: Voyager so improve ratings and, hence, advertising dollars because of her T&A factor?

I think yes, definitely. The reason I think so is that, not all of the women on voyager wore latex-tight uniforms. If she had been brought in strictly for her acting ability, they shouldn't have played her sex-appeal up so much.
Look at her next gig as a teacher. She didn't dress like a naughty schoolgirl for that role. Not that I would have complained or anything... Did I mention that she is hot?

All I can say is man did she look hot in that outfit she was wearing. One local DJ, when Jeri Ryan first went on the show, referred to Wednesday night (when Voyager was shown here) as "Jeri Ryan night". So I think she probably helped bring in more viewers.
All in all the series (all of them) had been going downhill since the original show. I mean everyone was so damn "nice" to everyone. I mean JT Kirk had so much action he probably had a raging case of space herpes.
Then there were the great Kirkisms... like one episode he punched this little alien guy whose only infraction was to be watching the actions of the landing party. Right after Kirk punches him in the face for no apparent reason, he says, "We... come in peace, we mean you know harm". Classic.
The other shows just couldn't compare. I mean, none of the other captains had their own fight music for example. None of the other captains would make their women dress up in short skirts and ogle them as they served him coffee on the bridge. Did you ever get the impression that he hand picked the "clipboard and coffee" girls?
And for the most part in the other shows, people rarely died. Not like the original series. Can you imagine those poor red shirts? There they are sitting around, drinking coffee, minding their own business, dreading the moment that their boss walks into the room and tells them, "Okay, everyone who is important on this ship... and one or two of you... is going to beam down to the planet." Do you think they drew straws? Do you think they even assigned those guys permanent lockers on the ship, or maybe just a carboard box with their name in magic marker on it? Poor bastards.

a few remarks as we are side tracking to star trek issues:
1) i think ryan was gr8 as a borg. sure she looks amazing, but the whole idea of having a crew member as a borg is the best yet. all the episodes involving her as borg were truly good.
2) the best captain ever was Jean Luke Picard. no doubt about it period. engage!
3) how about the new vulcan woman on the new Enterprise series? she is hot too no?
4) talking of hot women, Terry Farrel in DS9 was good looking also.
5) what do you think of the song of enterprise?
thats it.
from a die hard trekkie (until im 80).

Personally, I thought Jean Luc Picard was the best captain.

ST:TNG is now on heavy reruns on TNN. And it's been a long time since I watched them, and well... I gotta say... As good as DS9 or Voyager or Enterprise are, TNG is still the most impressive. In terms of character development/interaction, and hmm (tongue in cheek, this is SCI-FI) it's really the most believable. You *believe* that there could be a starship Enterprise. Forget the space-time anomoly crap, the people on the ship were real.

So I find myself in the odd position of being a TNG fan. And I look at all the 'classic' fans, and think perhaps *they* are classic fans because they watched it first. And maybe I'm a TNG fan because TNG is the show that *I* watched when I was young. Primacy effect?

In response to Roy's points:
3. Holy T&A factor batman! As *IF* her and the engineer had to strip down and spread blue goo over each other. My eyes goggled. It was blatant. It was *classic*. Those two are gonna be knockin' uglies, I swear.

5. I actually like it. I think people that have vitriolic hatred of it, need to move out of their parent's basement.

Ok.. bonus points.

Name the episode that has a Counsellor Troi T&A shot.

Yes, yes.. there might be several. But um... this one was pretty damn unmistakable as anything else. Could the camera *be* any closer?

lol Mike you got me there
and i agree with you on the song i like it too.
also, like you, i think that TNG was the best. i too actually belived it could happen. the actors are just terrific. no one plays a captain better than patrcik stewart, and worf and data. all excellent characters that just "put" you in the series. cant wait for the new movie to come out.
also, the 2 last seasons of DS9 were terrific. especially when worf married dax, and the whole dominion war stuff was really gr8!
and did you see those nipples on the vulcan in that shower shot!?!? you'd think it was -50 degress there!

That vulcan chick got it on with some other pointy-eared guy in the last episode. Naturally only a little skin was shown, but you got the idea. And yes she is hot.

Name the episode that has a Counsellor Troi T&A shot.

Best guess: 01.007: Lonely Among Us ....
But hey, I remember in the first few episodes she didn't even had trousers on...the good old days!

I can't believe that anyone would have to debate this topic. Voyager sucked and the ratings were awful. You could just hear the producers of the show... "What can we do to get these pubescent horny losers to watch this stupid show? I know, let's get some sexy chick that they can drool over! Imagine all the posters we can sell!!!"
