This week we're delighted to have Brett McLaughlin amongst us, helping to answer questions in the Java in General (intermediate) forum.

We'll be selecting four random posters in this forum to win a free copy of his excellent book, "Java 1.5 Tiger: A Developer's Notebook", provided by the publisher, O'Reilly.

Welcome Brett!

Hey there Brett!
Welcome welcome welcome to the ranch.

We like your Tiger book so much we actually *stole* another copy of it from Eric and Beth Freeman (fellow O'Reilly authors) last week. We stayed at their house for a week and brought your book with us, but as we were leaving their house, we couldn't remember if we had packed our copy, so just in case, we took the copy sitting on their table. Turns out it was *theirs*. But this way Bert and I don't have to fight over it, now that we have two. We'll just take our time sending back our stolen copy...

p.s. I really love the developer's notebooks. Thank you for building in the coffee stains in advance, since I always end up with them on my books.

p.s.s. we missed you at digi foo last weekend. We will all have to meet up somewhere in the southwest soon.

cheers,
Kathy

Brett,
Welcome to JavaRanch!

I gave your book a review with 10 horseshoes, currently the only book I've rated that high. It was awesome! And my coworkers agree it looks really cool, especially the coffee stains and graph paper pages.

Welcome, Brett!

I'm sure interested in learning more about Java 5.0. So far, my only exposure is what I've read in discussions and links given here at the Saloon. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of a big school project that uses Java 1.4. I don't want to mess up my development environment until that's out of the way.

Still, I'd love to win a copy of your book, so hopefully I can find time to participate in the discussions this week. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about the new features in Java 5.0.

Hey all-

First, huge apologies to being late to this party -- I've been caught up in the Yankees/Red Sox fervor, and flying on planes to try and catch games. That's probably not a very geeky thing to see, so I hope I haven't blown my introverted, monitor-staring cover. In any case, I'm going to catch up on threads today, and we'll get this thing going in earnest.
It should go without saying (but I'll say it anyway -- I am an author) that I really, -really- appreciate all of you taking the time to at least pick up and look at the book. And I'm as happy (well, mostly as happy) to get negative comments as positive ones -- I'm looking to create better books. So let her rip, and we'll have a good time.
Again, sorry for being late to the party...

-Brett

Brett,

As long as you're supporting the Red Sox I'll forgive you!
