You are correct!
Olowakandi is virtuly unknown proir to draft. He is over 7 foot, playing center for a small college. Bibby is kind of disappointed after the draft, saying: "I heard NBA says bigger is better."
Indeed, a good guard takes more talent and hard work. And there is a lot more competition for a guard. Unless you are Michael Jordan. Well, even MJ is only a #3 pick.
A good center is relativly easy, as long as you have the size, then you are half way there.
But most NBA teams build around their big man-the center. Every team hopes to find their franchize center first, so they never pass the opportunity by.
There are more #1 picks at the center position:
Shaq O'Neil
Tim Duncan (can play center and forward)
David Robinson
Patrick Ewing
Hakeem Olajuwan
Olowankandi
Elton Brand
and the latest:
Ming Yao
