I want to bring up a file dialog that defaults to my Java application's install directory. Is there a way to get that information from the system?

Java application's install directory
the current working directory where the JVM was launched from.

These are NOT necessarily the same directory.
user.dir is the current directory >> the second of above.
The first of above can be anywhere, depending on your system and usages.

But that's okay, because you really don't want to be allowing users to mess about with the place where your JRE is installed.

Paul, it's not where the JRE is installed (that's the user's JRE, and none of my business anyway). It's where the user is at when he launches the application that I want to know.

But that's not what you asked originally
