What exactly is the difference in Win 98 and Win ME? -As far as I've seen, the only difference is that ME has a few extra bells and whistles -- like options that make sharing Internet connections easier. Really, tho'...ME is basically just 98 with the downloadable updates.
What all Java Web Servers can I install on this OS? -This question, I'm not sure how to interpret it, so I'll just spew out a variety of answers.
If you mean JUST servers in general so you can work on HTML and Java at home, and be able to
test results like how
applets show up in your webpages, Personal Web Server (available in the NT 4.0 Option Pack from
Microsoft) SHOULD work just fine with WinME. I wouldn't recommend it for actual webhosting, however, as PWS has some serious security issues with letting unauthorized users grope your files. If you DO plan on using your laptop for webhosting, I'd recommend using Internet Information Server (also in the NT 4.0 Option Pack), but that is only available for WinNT.
Now, as far as Java servers go...such as Java Web Server (available from
Sun's Products and APIs page), that will only run on WinNT. But again, if you're webhosting and trying to run transaction servers and what-not, WinME is NOT what you want.
Moving on, if all you want to do is play with code and learn Java (which is how I'd like to interpret your question), you can download the Java 1.3 SDK and Runtime Environment 1.3 from the above link for Sun. They don't have WinME listed as an option for O/S's on the download page, but they SHOULD work.
Will there be any problems which I could face using Java stuff
on this machine? -There shouldn't be...unless the Java downloads for Win98 won't work with WinME. If it doesn't work the first time, try it a couple other times...MS products get kinda skittish sometimes. If it won't work after that, you might have to look into getting a copy of Win98 or WinNT...
I hope that was of some little help at least.
