I declared a static variable in the main function, when I try to compile it gives errors. Why?
My code is like this:
class Test
{ int a;
public static void main(String args[])
{ static int x =3;
System.out.println(" x = " +x );
}
}

HI,
Local variables cannot be declared static in Java.
The static modifier identifies a variable as belonging to a class. Only one copy a static variable is created.
Try changing your code to:

Hope that helps.

Hi Jane,
Thanks. I was of the impression that static variable can also be created like any other local variables.

Hi,
Java has seven kinds of variables: class, instance, array components, method parameters, constructor parameters, exception handler paramters and local variables. They all have their own rules. If you're curious you can check the JLS at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/second_edition/html/typesValues.doc.html#18470
