Hi,
In my 7 years of IT experience, I had never experienced such a situation. Definitely would like to get your comments on this, as this had caused agony to me. I do report to Boss who is an Indian. Last week my boss was screaming at me like anything and he abruptly put down the phone which was definitely rude and non professional. Mistake (if you call that) was very trivial by any standards. no customer complain. forgot to clarify a point in mail sent to his boss.
I worked under different managers (non-Indian). Im not generalizing here. But I do see such behavior common among Indian Managers.
Regards
Ram

Used to work for a screamer. His favorite line was WHAT THE F*************************** !!!
Anyway, it was okay though, cause you could curse to his face if you were right, AND you always knew were you stood with him.

This reminds me of that Mae West quote. While in court, the judge asked Mae, "Are you trying to show contempt for this court?" She responded by saying, "No, your honor, I'm doing my best to conceal it."

I have seen people like that and yes it is true to an extent that "some" Indian managers are more likely to scream and create a ruckus compared to westerners. In my experience such people normally came from a non-IT background such as stock-market or labour intensive industries where screaming / yelling is the way to be. Other managers I've seen who came from an IT background never raise their voice and generally prefer to sort out issues with a discussion.
Escalate the issue if you can or quit if possible. I wouldnt suggest that you take such matters lying down.

I've seen it once (the guy was a Canadian). I left that company shortly afterward.
I think the best thing to do is to speak extra, extra quiet. Keep your responses light hearted and professional. If your behavior is anything other than perfect, then you were antagonizing your boss and you should be fired. If you are perfect, then it is clear to others that you are a saint that should get a raise.
Being yelled at is in many ways an opportunity. A test of your professionalism.

If you know you are going to leave the company, be sure to buy a pair of industrial strength ear mufflers (same ones used by the jackhammer dudes). Put them on and present your boss with your going away present: A copy of the Emperor's New Clothes. Maybe he'll get the hint.

I once worked for a boss who was ex-Army* whose idea of management was to shout and swear at people and try to bully them. That team didn't produce much and had a high turnover; I worked there exactly a year ( I didn't want to appear a job hopper.)
* we believe he had been in the potato peeling corps, and had issues. I had another boss who had actually led men in the army and I'd work for him again.

Don't look up, and don't look down
Ya don't dast made the boss-man frown
Bend your knees, and bow your head
And pull that rope until you're dead

A lot of people cry when they cut onions. The trick is not to form an emotional bond. This tiny ad told me:
