Guys
Is this true ?
Effective May 1, 2001, the tuition for this course is US$200.00. This entitles you to full nitpicking on all assignments. That's $200 for our way (pain, torture, rewriting your code to satisfy us) or $2000 for your way (you always write beautiful code, and we can never find anything to pick at). We're happy to continue to do this for students who began the course before May 1, 2001, at no additional charge. Just make sure you keep posting.

The CattleDrive was just getting way too many students. Paul or Marilyn will lay out the full details, but we had to do something because Marilyn was spending about 40 hours a week looking over assignments and remember she does all that on a volunteer basis.
You will get more info on this soon. But for anyone who is already a member of the Drive, you will not be effected.

wow, i am glad i got in when i did!
as for the "nitpickers"... you guys are doing a great job! i really appreciate you taking your time to look over my code and tell me what i am doing wrong (espcially since this is volunteer). i noticed that the student list almost doubled since i joined a couple weeks ago, and i wondered how you would keep up with the load.
not to be rude, but for the students that ask why their code hasn't been graded yet... now you know why. we (students) should all be grateful to the nitpickers for spending their free time for our benefit.
thanks!

sigh... Hope the tuition doesn't change the feel of JavaRanch.
I do understand though
On a lighter note: $200 isn't that bad. Go to your local college/univeristy. You'll pay a higher tuition plus a bunch of other fees. And chances are, all you'll get in the way of feedback is a grade.
For once I beat a deadline

Dave, I'll let Marilyn answer that. She is the keeper and knows more about it than I do
Greg,
Thanks for the words. Is true that work load really has increased. I help out Marilyn but in a very small sense and I spend about 8 to 10 hours per week, so I am sure she is swamped.

Think they'll offer a refund to students that graduate to become "nitpickers" themselves? (Like Bill?) Note that I wouldn't gain anything 'cause I made it in before the deadline.
Whew!

Holy smokes! You spend a couple of weeks doing your J-O-B and look what happens! I've been swamped with a web project, finally starting to put the raps on it...haven't been here for a couple of weeks (Johannes, I'm probably about to go red on the assignment log if I haven't already!) Hope that doesn't mean I have to pay...
Just kidding of course, I've commented several times about how I couldn't believe this was free. You guys deserve every penny. At least this way, you should be pretty confident that whomever signs up is serious about the course! Keep up the good work!
Ciao

Funny I was going to suggest starting a fund where all students could contribute. The nitpickers could then use it for books, exam fees etc.
Looks like a was beaten to the draw by the "sherrif".
40 hours considering the timestamps I've seen on the e-mails I've received from her and on her postings, I think 40 hours is even under-estimated.
You deserve every penny Marilyn.
Thanks.

The drive is worth paying for.
We're getting a great deal of hands-on experience and motivation. It's more fun to write code and share it than just writing it for your own benefit.
At times, learning does get boring, but the Cattle Drive is one way to keep it interesting.

Wow, for once I finally did something in time to save some $$$!
Seriously though, the coaching and obvious effort put forth by the "nitpickers" is way above what I could ever expect for free. $200 is probably still less than fair compensation, but it'll at least be a start.
Submitting the next assignment even as I type this...

Wow.
$200 is not a lot of money for the services that are provided here at the Drive.
I'm afraid though, that this will 'drive' away any new people from experiencing this great service. People are not usually willing to put out money for things on the 'net. Heck, $200 is almost 9 months worth of my online service. And for students, well you know how broke they always are.
I hope I'm wrong here.
p.s. when and where will the official news be posted? Anybody know?

If you sent in your first assignment yesterday, you're home free.

I know you're kidding, but just to clarify --
Anyone who started the cattle drive before May 1st may continue for the price of posting.

I'll post another thread with more details later.

Goodness! I'm lucky. I just started the drive 10 days ago! Was planning to wait until AFTER I finished my SCJP exam. Glad I didn't.
Thanks Marilyn & Bill for the excellent service. I know grading assignments is a lot of work.
regards,
Jyotsna

Hi Johannes,
Yes, you did put me on the log - I'm (currently)#18. You spelled my first name wrong though- transposed the 'ts' in Jyo'ts'na.
Thanks for checking anyhow.
regards,
Jyotsna
