I am about as novice as it gets when it comes to programming so please bear with me.

I have a class assignment and am absolutely dumbfounded. Everything seems so confusing right now. I could really use a little help to get started.

This is from my textbook:

"Your history professor has so many students in her class that she has trouble determining how well the class does on eams. She has discovered that you are a computer whiz and has asked you to write an application to perform some simple statistical analyses on exam scores. Your application must work with any class size up to 100.

Write and test a computer application that does the following:
-Reads the test grades from the file inData.
-Calculates the class mean, standard deviatio, and percentage of test scores falling between the ranges < 10, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49,...
-Prints summaryshowing the mean, the standard deviation, and a histogram of the persentage distribution of test scores."

So that's it. A little help would be great!

Thanks!

break the assignment down into the smallest requirements.
start with this, throw the rest away

-Reads the test grades from the file inData.

write a program to read in the data, and print the data out to the screen,
just to make sure you've done it correctly.

if you run into problems, post back with the specific problem and the code you have tried

when all OK, move onto the next 'small requirement'

Also, write as little code as possible between each compile/test/fix cycle. The worst thing you can do is write 500 lines of code before you attempt to compile once.

which brings up the question - Do you know how to write a java file, and how to compile it? Do you have Java development environment installed on your machine?
