I just enrolled in their service.

Positives are they give 2 instore coupons per month.

Small negative:
I had almost all my first 10 movies in 'available now' status. Ideally they should mail 1,2,3 at the beginning. Surprisingly I got notification that they mailed 3,4,6.
Their algorithms must be screwed up(i am not surprised about that because they started running only recently)

I experienced to the contrary regarding Netflix shipping times. They never screwed up with my movie queue.

Netflix does have better variety of titles at this point(it has more international selections than blockbuster), I am not too keen about availability of new films though; but thats just me.

I use Netflix and I generally receive movies in two or three days. I certainly wouldn't call that slow. Also, I rarely if ever have a problem these days with new releases. It is true that there used to be a problem with these quite awhile ago, but this no longer seems to be an issue. Netflix has over 2,000,000 members. It seems the market has decided whose service is preferable.

The thing I keep hearing about Netflix' time to get movies to you is that it depends on how close you live to one of their distribution centers. People who live close may only wait a couple of days. Others, further away, may wait closer to a week. I haven't looked at how Blockbuster's service is set up to know if they have better coverage.

Don't say that yet. Both Walmart & blockbuster are new in this area. Only time will tell(in a year from now), who survived the fight.

I just enrolled in Netflix�s 2 week free trial. So far, so good! I ordered 3 movies on Mon evening. The movies were shipped out on Tuesday and I received movies on Wednesday. I returned a movie this morning (Thurs). Hopefully, the return process will also reflect Netflix�s speedy delivery process.

Netflix probably ships faster than Blockbuster and all that. But $15/month(3 at a time) and 2 instore coupons per month is a real good deal.

I use netflix and love it. I must be close to the pickup/dropoff point because I generally get movies the day after they ship. If I put one(or two or three) in the mail on Mon. I'll usually get the next one on Wed. I also think they try to keep track of how efficient their shipping is, as I'll occationally get emails asking if my movie came the day before, the day of, or the day after it was promised. My only complaint is that I like anime and in some cases they only have half of the series.

I have used netflix, dvdbarn and now I am trying blockbuster.
Netflix service is good. Dvdbarn had a nice feature - you can inform them that you have shipped a movie and they'll send you another one asap. But their service was sloooow..I wonder if it still exists.
Blockbuster seems like a good deal($15 month) so far - They shipped 3 movies but I only received 2, still waiting for 3rd one. Blockbuster website says they'll merge their stores and this online business sometime in future. That would be cool-hopefully it means if we like we can return movies in store and get new ones.

And that would be the only reason I would change. Netflix has worked great for me and I'm only ONE day away postal delivery from their nearest station. I usually get the films the day after they send them and they usually get mine the day after I send it. Never more than a day after that either way.

When you combine that with a fast (16X) DVD writer you have it all. Well, not really; all I need now is a 26" LCD widescreen (16:9) TV for the bedroom...

Blockbuster seems like a good alternative. However, I'm going to wait until they open a distribution center in my hometown before I try Blockbuster.

It seems as if Netflix always has movies in stock. Since joining last week, I have yet to encounter a waiting period for any movie.

I had an awful experience in regards to blockbusters online service. First off, I ordered monk, they sent me disk 3, it was broken, I let them know, they resent it, I received a new copy, it was broken, there turn around time is awful. I received a movies about once a week vs netflix who I send a movie back takest hem a day to receive it i get it the very day after that. So about a 2 day turn around time. Blockbuster 6 days. The online coupons are great, if they'd scan. I waited in line feeling like a jerk for 15 minutes while the guy typed in that huge long barcode number.

I'll stick with Netflix they rock!

I use Blockbuster online. I have also used Netflix. I like Blockbuster for 2 reasons.

1. 2 in store coupons for a free game or movie per month
2. When the parcel service scans my movie that I have sent back Blockbuster is notified and my next movie is shipped out. This means I don't have to wait for my movie(s) to get all the way back to the warehouse before the next one is shipped. Thus, my turn-around is much quicker.

I signed-up for Blockbuster�s online service yesterday. Even though, I have a Netflix membership, I gave Blockbuster a try. After all, Blockbuster offers 2 free e-coupons and are $3.00 cheaper than Netlfix. Blockbuster also now has a distribution center in Chicago. So I commenced by adding 15 movies to my Blockbuster rental Queue. Unfortunately, all 15 movies had either a �Short Wait Time� or �Long Wait time� or �Very long wait time.� Literally, all 15 movies were unavailable. Sure I thought, �they are new releases.� However, 12 out of the 15 movies that I had chosen at Blockbuster, had no wait time with Netflix.

I immediately called Blockbuster to cancel the service. For now, I am going to stick with Netflix. Netflix�s turnaround time is incredibly swift.

Does anyone else care to share their Blockbuster online rental experience(s)?

1) What you said in your first three sentences (instead of yesterday, 6 days ago.)

2) They have a distribution center in Miami and Netflix in Ft. Lauderdale which is one county closer to me (Palm Beach County).

My experience was just the opposite. For new releases Netflix told me that I had to wait (long wait in some cases) and Blockbuster had it now.

All I can say is that's interesting.

Too soon for me to make a call.

For how long have you been using Blockbuster�s service? I really wish I could say the same for Blockbuster in the Chicago area. My only guess is that in Chicago, Blockbuster doesn�t stock many copies per title. Maybe it�s different in Florida.

Netflix�s Chicago distribution center is about 2 miles away from my place. Maybe that is why the turnaround time is so fast.

Also, is �The Movie Gallery� a major movie rental store in the Southeast? I read an article over Blockbuster�s aggressive bid to purchase Hollywood Video, even though The Movie Gallery had already placed a bid.

Check this out in case it happens to you:

If you read the FINE print on the back of Blockbuster's E coupons, it says that these coupons have to be redeemed one at a time UNLESS the other coupons are also e coupons.

We all have seen the rule in many different places that reads essentially "only one coupon per transaction".

Well, e coupons are excluded by the fine print on them which makes them part of the contract that Blockbuster has with us e-customers.

Well, guess what, the other day I went to the local BB store with which I have a standard account and the manager of the store, which could not have been older than 19 years old, told me flatly that I could only redeem one coupon at a time.

I promptly proceeded to tell her that apparently e coupons were the exception to that common rule SINCE IT SAID SO in the "instructions".

She took the time to read it and promptly let me have my TWO free movies without the exchange of currency and handed to me both movies WITHOUT SAYING "THANK YOU".

She owed me TWO freaking "Thank You"s: One for shopping there and the most important one for showing her how to do her job as manager without even asking for payment in the form of cash, another free movie or... even better.. a... B[COMMUNICATION INTERRUPTED...}

I know on their website it says that the parcel service scans the movie so that Blockbuster doesn't necessarily have to physically recieve it before they send out the next one... but I don't see that. It seems to take a few days before they send my next movie. But I think the in-store coupons make up for it.

But anyway --- I'm happy with it so far, we'll see how it goes.

Has Blockbuster�s online rental service improved? I ask because I am thinking of switching from Netflix to Blockbuster. Upon receiving my returned DVD, Netflix no longer ships out the next DVD on the same day. Instead it waits one business day before shipping out the next DVD in my queue. For example, I returned a movie yesterday (Tuesday) and Netflix received the movie today (Wednesday). However, Netflix will ship out my next DVD tomorrow (Thursday).

Is Blockbuster any better? Or am I already receiving fast service?

Some information form their site that you may find relevant:

Q: How can I tell when I'll get a particular title?

A: We will send you an e-mail letting you know when we have shipped your DVD, including the anticipated time of delivery. Our goal is to ship you the DVDs listed highest in your queue. We try to ship you DVDs from the distribution center closest to you so that you get movies quickly. In certain instances, your top choice may not be available to you from your closest distribution center. When this happens, your DVD will ship on the next business day and may come from an alternate distribution center.

Q: How long will it take to get my movies?

A: Movies are sent by first class mail and usually arrive within about one business day following shipment. We will send you an e-mail letting you know when we have shipped your DVD and when you can expect it to arrive. We do not ship on weekends or postal holidays.

A: We try to ship to you the movies listed highest in your queue. In certain instances, all of your top choices may not be available to you from your closest distribution center. Have been using Blockbuster for almost 4 or so months.

My latest observations:
. New movies are always available.
. Old movies are 50% chance(either available or shortwait or longerwait)

But I am holding on for the timebeing because they have that 2 free coupons carrot that I can not resist.

Also, with blockbuster u can use 'Issue with DVD' and tell them 'shipped already, but did not clear the queue' and they ship the next one in the list without questions. Thatway you have much better turnaround on ur movies.

We have a couple of new places starting this "flat-fee" mail-based DVD library thing here in Australia.. costs seems to be settling around AU$33 (US$25) per month for 3 disks at a time and I was wondering about taking them up...

After reading these comments I might have to make sure I use a service for a couple of trial months (usually at a slightly higher cost) before committing to a longer contract! (I wouldnt want to get caught in a contract by a provider who takes too long to turn around my returns! )

Cant afford it right now since I'm spending my entertainment $$$'s on cable TV, which I'm still tied in to a contract for the next 15 months DOH!! . (In case you're wondering I got the cable TV 'cos my Free-to-air reception was so bad, not for all the Murdock trailer-trash "Worlds stupidest people" shows and endless 10 yr old repeats..., but now that Free-to-air digital-HDTV is available I should be able to clean up my reception and stop paying my "Fox-tax"! )

Isnt it strange how despite technology being available and reasonable enough to deliver on demand movies down the cable to me its *cheaper* for me to go down the road to the video shop? and cheaper still to use the postal service ?? Doesnt this seem a bit backwards?

Does Blockbuster still censor movies, taking out the "dirty" parts. Or did they abandon that practice.

I wasn't aware of such a practice by Blockbuster. I used to rent movies from Blockbuster store and never noticed any censoring. I eventually switched to Netflix because I don't have the time to visit a Blockbuster store. I am extremely happy, thus far, with Netflix.

I emailed them about this and they emailed me back telling me that's what their customers wanted and they wouldn't carry both. I didn't believe this for a second since all sales charts showed that the Widescreen versions of movies were outselling the full-screen versions of the same movie. That was the last time I dealt with Blockbuster, which was maybe 4 or more years ago.

4 years is a long time. People change you know. They might have got a sensible consultant(from Deloitte or some similar place) who gave them reasons that are readily evident.

I rented DVDs from Blockbuster from late 2001 until Jan 2005. From what I recall, 99% of the time, the DVDs were widescreen.

Check out this New York Times review of online rental services. It mentions the censorship issue, so it looks like they still refuse to stock NC-17 movies and cut pieces out of some of the movies they rent. If you do a search in Google for "blockbuster censorship" you'll get lots of hits.

Maybe I never noticed if movies were censored or if the movies were widescreen or full screen. I had no idea that Blockbuster engages in censorship.

Its definitely better, unless your mail carrier takes the DVD for couple of days. I have a feeling that is what is happening once in a while for me(since which ever the DVDs that endup late in my mail box are opened)

What is your experience right now with Blockbuster's turnaround time? For instance, if you return a movie early Monday morning, does Blockbuster receive movie on Tuesday? Or, does it take longer? Also, how long does it take for you to receive movies from Blockbuster?

Their turnaround is pretty good. If you send in the DVD on monday morning, they sure are mailing in the next DVD on tuesday. When it gets to your mailbox in in the hands of USPS and your mail delivery guy.

Closed my blockbuster account couple of months ago. Started using Netflix to check it out.

Main differences are
a. The movie recommendations works more precise in Netflix.
b. You can have access to other users reviews and their lists if made public. I think that is a great idea.

I am yet to feel the shipping aspects of Netflix. I will post on that later.
 
My favorite is a chocolate cupcake with white frosting and tiny ad sprinkles.
