There are 3 dimensions which can be shown physically.
It is said by Einstien that 4th dimension is time.
What could be 5th dimension?

Perhaps there are more "physical" dimensions that we just can't perceive. Picture a 2D "flatland" scenario - a group of flatlanders living on a flat plane. They have absolutely no idea that a third dimension exists and couldn't even properly imagine it if they did. One day a human comes along and walks along the plane they live on. The flatlanders can't see the human, as they can only see in the two dimensions of their plane, so all they would see is a series of footprints appearing and disappearing. To them it would seem like magic as they can't see the third dimension that the human is moving through. I wonder how likely it is that there are other dimensions that we can't see, but are full of strange things.

If string theory is correct then there are 11 dimensions.

If Bosonic string theory is correct then there are 26 dimensions (25 spacial dimensions and one dimension of time.

Some quantum physicists (Hawking is one) believe there are 11 dimensions.

However, the 5th dimension is a singing group.

There's a great book called "Flatland", by Edwin Abbott, which i'm betting Joe has read. It's about a square who lives in flatland, who is visited by a sphere. as the sphere passes through Flatland, all the square can perceive is a circle getting bigger, then smaller again (he can tell it's a circle by feeling how smooth it is, and a few other techniques).

it's only about 100 pages, and definatly worth a read.

I beleive somebody wrote a kind of sequel as well, but i can't remember what it is called...

found a link to an online version of the book:

Flatland: A romance of Many Dimesions

Then the sphere started singing "Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon? Way up in the air, in my beautiful balloon? We can ..."

No, wait. That's the Fifth Dimension. Never mind.
