In another thread, someone mentioned the date 8.1997, and then further qualified it as the same month Princess Diana died. This type of episodic memory has always interested me... and I was wondering what were some of the defining moments in other Rancher's lives. I think my big three would be:

1) Challenger Explosion in 1986
2) Beginning of Desert Storm in 1991
3) 9/11

I would say that some of my defining moments occurred before my birthday.
  • on 22 November 1963: the date America's greatest hero-president was murdered.
  • 29 Apr 75, the day the last American Died in Vietnam
  • September 25, 1957: the day 1,000 US paratroopers protected nine black children from segregationists, and started the end to the racial divide in America.

I'll add on to that list.

    1) Aug 9 1974 - Nixon resigns
    2) Challenger Explosion in 1986
    3) Beginning of Desert Storm in 1991
    4) 9/11

For #3 I had just left the Marine Corps the year before and my battalion (1st bat 7th Marines) was shown on CNN.

May 16th, 1990. The day the man died who taught just about everyone my age and under in the U.S. how to count, the alphabet, the meaning of "cooperation", and the fact that while it's not easy bein' green, it is really not that bad, either.

July 20th, 1969. Neil Armstrong steps onto the moon. Five-year-old me watches, sitting on the kitchen floor. The TV is black and white, with rabbit ears, on a spindly wire cart that allowed us to move the set so we could see it from the kitchen. In less than two months, I will start school. Because of what I see on TV, I understand why.

Sometime in the early 70's... one day my mom told me Sesame Street would be different, and sure enough, it was. Suddenly, Oscar and Big Bird were more vibrant than they ever had been in the past... very mysterious. I always wondered how my mom would have known in advance how drastically my little life would change. I only found out a few years ago it was because my parents bought a color TV.

New York City blackout of 1977. Still remember many of the details of that night. I lived in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, at the time.

My personal milestone in world events:

30th June 1998: England lose on penalties to Argentina - ending the world cup dream for another 4 years.

The resulting mood change of the nation and lack of comprehension by my girlfriend at the time were key factors in my decision to leave England for shores where football would no longer be at the forefront of my mind.

5th August 1998: I arrived in Australia, jobless, single, and full of hope!

Can't believe a game of football made you take life chnaging decisions.

The game was only one factor in the decision of course. The decision was pretty much made before the game - but the flow of events following this particular game were enough to clarify my position and help spur me on to some decisive action!! (Would I have been able to leave England had the nation remained in a jubilant mood and had England gone on to win? Probably - but it would have taken me longer to get motivated!) - As it happened it was *that* evening when I finally made the decision!.. events now inextricably linked in my mind!!
