Welcome to our spankin' new forums!

Well, we made it! We got us all some brand new forum software! Welcome to our tweaked version of jforum, built on open source java code. You heard that right.

OK pardner, your turn. Here's what you got to do:

  • Login with your existing name and password and use the new forums! If you can't log in, email us at moosesaloon@javaranch.com
  • Check your profile:
  • > If you have more than three "words" in your display name, you will want to update the first and last name fields.
  • > If your first or last name had accented characters before, you'll probably need to fix them here.
  • > Email notifications about answered posts are turned on by default - remember to turn it off if you want to reduce inbox clutter.
  • Update your RSS feeds
  • If you use the Java Ranch search plug-in, you'll need to delete and re-install it.

  • What if I have a problem? Praise? An enhancement wish?

Talk to us! Tell us what's not working for you here.. Our immediate concern is making sure things function as is. In other words, if you leave a feature request we might consider adding it to the list we already started. Don't hold your breath, though, we're still really busy. ;-)

    What will be different?

    URLs

You'll notice pretty quickly that the URLs look pretty different. Not only do we have lovely meaningful URLs, but they're tacked on to a new domain name: www.coderanch.com. Call it a long term strategic decision. No one was laid off as a result of this decision.

    Post Counts
Your post count might be slightly less than expected, but not by much. The reason is that we are not migrating every last post, thread and forum right away (like deleted posts, or our April Fools special forum, etc.) Plus, the old forum software sometimes double counted posts, but this time we got smarter software. Keep posting, it will grow again. :-)

    My Watched Threads
We've migrated your watched threads. You can see them under "My Bookmarks".

    Where did my feature go??
Wondering where that thingamajig went? Check here first: http://faq.javaranch.com/java/JForumTransition.

Enjoy the new year and the new forums!!

From your friendly JavaRanch, eh, CodeRanch staff

Would you like fries with that?

Wow! We're here! This is so cool!

I think the biggest thanks needs to go to

    Jeanne Boyarsky

For not only working, working, working and getting all of the contributors to work in harmony, but to keep me from butting in and screwing everything up!

What has it been Jeanne? Ten months of evenings and weekends?

So, Jeanne, now can I openly whine about all of the little things I want?

This might be a good time to thank Ulf and Ernest. Most of you are probably completely unaware of all the work these two do behind the scenes to keep everything running. Not only are they out there helping folks understand Java, but they are (daily) hip deep in the innards of JavaRanch tinkering with bits and bobs to keep us running smoothly. And they were intimately involved in this transition.

    I'm mighty excited!

It's a "sticky thread", which sticks to the top of the forum. Only admins can make them.

It seems fair to enumerate those "others" now. So thank you Pauline for keeping enthusiasm up for 10 months and managing the project, Christophe/Bear/Amit/Ulf/Ernest (and anyone I'm forgetting) for coding changes, and the entire JavaRanch staff for testing.

It may have been a five hour deployment, but one I'm proud to be part of.

The new forum software looks so much great.

However, in the old forum, there was a home icon on the top of our posts, which directs the user to our home page. What happens to it in the new forum? :?:

And, One more question, what is an "Announce" post, with this icon> ? Is it reserved for administrators only?

Ouch! It seems you had removed my signature ?

    Treimin,
I've added the question about the home page link to our transition document. (It's in your public profile under website.)

Yes, announcements are an admin only feature.

I can't say what happened to your signature. Many people had their signature migrate ok. Like me. I recommend you retype it.

As for the greenhorn thing, I've logged it in our bug list and we'll need to look into it.

Very impressive. And I'd say it was about time too--I always wondered about the relaxed nature of the old forum
    functionality.

But, if you were logged into a forum in the old site, and did a search, the search parameter would default to that
forum, which I think is the correct behavior. Now it appears to default to the all sites option.

    What do you think?

ps I just found the 'search this forum' input box--that'll do it.

I would like to post a bug which I found.... I don't know if here is the place right, but...
I tried to change my password and when I clicked in OK button It show me the error about the required fields to fill... but they are already... So, I tried some times and the same error happened. I log out and when I log in with my old password does not work more! However, I tried with the new password and It worked... In underground it had changed, but it showed that error...

PS: That same error, same way, It happened in other site which use the JForum, the GUJ, when I tried to change my password there... (http://www.guj.com.br/index.jsp)

PS2: I saw that bug because my girlfriend forced me to change my password. She discovered that the my password was composed by the birthday date of my old girlfriend... Ouch! :P

Well, the new forum has options to decorate text messages by text color, font size, and also html codes. Yes, it is useful, but a little bit abusive. Look at the first post of this topic.

Therefore, I think there should be some additional rules (about using text decorations) should be placed in "How to Ask a Question" section.

    Another problem.

In the old forum software, we can see whether someone replied to our posts, by clicking "My Posts" link. It was very much useful.

But "My Posts" section in the new forum software displays our own messages only. It doesn't display who is the last poster; so we can't track whether someone replied or not.

    Treimin,
That's what moderators are for. That particular post was RIGHT after deployment so we were a bit swamped. I've edited the post and added a brief note to the KeepItDown wiki page. Feel free to elaborate. It's a public wiki.

    James/Treimin,
NOt being to delete posts is intentional. See http://faq.javaranch.com/java/JForumTransition

i don't know whether it is a bug or profile setting. On my SCBCD forum, even if i add a new topic. Or i see old topic. the iconic symbol always represents no new messages. In short even, if there is new message- then also it showing it as a old message.

COngrats for a new forum look. it was much awatied. was it done first time or second or third time ever.
