Agreed she did not give out her actual salary, but that is to market herself appropriately in the software industry.
She got the job on her merit and after facing different rounds of interviews.
Why do employers need to know your previous salary?
Ok I guess this is not the forum for this question but brought it up only because Manish mentioned she cheated about her last salary.

Well, discussion indeed is drifting from MD to JD (I know I started this drift, but...), but just a small explanation nevertheless --
There are two things here -- one getting through interviews and getting an offer, and the second is negotiating the salary. If you think employers should not know about your previous salary, express it that way when you are asked a question about your last salary, as Mark suggested
here.
Modifying salary slip to get higher salary sounds...."less than honest" to put it mildly.
Besides -- I did not call Rashmi a cheat (I understand you may not be referring to me). There is a HUGE difference between saying "your XYZ action is cheating" and saying "you are a cheat". The former criticizes the action whereas the later criticizes a person, and is putting label on the person based on single action; whereas a person himself is too complex a creature to put labels so easily. That's the reason I immediately explained that I didn't say that. I just posed questions with the hope that they *might* drive home the point.
Maybe I should refrain from posting such replies in future. To each his own!
