That's amazing - you're only the second woman ever I hear saying they like him (not that I know many men who like him, of course).

I'm a big fan of his. My favorite albums are Frank's Wild Years and Mule Variations.

I only know Closing Time and Small Change, but I enjoy them. I'm open to suggestions as to what to try next.

One of my all time favorite songs is "Invitation to the blues" on the "Small Change" album.

And I only learned about him because of his song in Night on Earth movie that you recommended!

MS: I only know Closing Time and Small Change, but I enjoy them. I'm open to suggestions as to what to try next.

Rain Dogs and Real Gone are my favorite so far.

I got into Tom waits after hearing Cold Cold Ground in the soundtrack to Léolo. It's still one of my favorite Waits songs. I also like his occasional appearances as an actor: Down by Law, Dracula, Short Cuts and Coffee and Cigarettes come to mind.

(Léolo, by the way, features one of the wackiest methods of being conceived shown on film since Oskar Matzerath in The Tin Drum.)

Oh, and I just remembered that Frank's Wild Years also contains the song Innocent When You Dream which is played during the final scene in Smoke; that was quite memorable, I thought. So I heartily recommend that album.

Just heard his two songs in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which is one amazing movie -- every serious Meaningless Driveler should watch it.

Ulf: you're only the second woman ever I hear saying they like him

I said that I liked him, but that was an understatement. I am pretty much crazy about him.

I was perplexed by your statement about women, so I set up to run my own experiment. Which is to say, I attempted to feed Tom Waits to any eligible female I can find. So far I found one, highly intelligent, and significantly older than me. Upon listening to "Rain Dogs", she said "he has no voice." He has no voice? HE HAS NO VOICE? Whatever he has – this is what I call "THE VOICE".

My roommate has a nasty habit of listening to singers with, um, "voices" -- very nice, pleasant voices; to me they sound like a cat scratching the glass – where does she find them? When she starts her music routine I feel like getting up (!!!) and running to the nearest Walgreens to get a couple of earplugs.

Ah, yes... Those to whom "a voice" means over-produced, bombastic shrieking. Well, I prefer something interesting, with character. And Tom Waits makes great albums.

... and speaking of people who purportedly have a better singing voice - one person who does not is Scarlett Johansson. Unfortunately, that didn't stop her from making an album full of Tom Waits cover versions. Friends don't let friends listen to this!

Being the aforementioned woman from Ulf's post, I confirm I like Tom Waits. Well, I like most of his albums. Some, I actually love (The Heart of Saturday Night, Nighthawks at the Diner, the Black Rider, Mule Variations). The version of Sea of Love from his last album is fantastic. As for the person who thought he has no voice, she should be taken out back and shot. Oops. it's my first post and I've already broken the board's terms...

But then, maybe not.

She handled Людмилю Улицкую when she fall down her head – she talked about her as a girl being few years her junior at the Biology Department of the Moscow University – she wrote a very popular book about Даниэль Штайн, переводчик.
