Personally, I believe that VB, .NET and some other languages are better than Java for PC Software development. But Java is the best for web based development.
Java is perfectly capable as a desktop platform. I know for a fact that a very well known company uses Java to provide multi-platform desktop applications relied on by thousands of users. I'm not saying that Java is used in that field more often than any other platform. I'm just saying that Java is very capable as a desktop application platform. But I see your points.
All code in my posts, unless a source is explicitly mentioned, is my own.
I was considering to underake the SCJD but decided to do the SWCD first then do the SCJD. The main reason was that I found the content of the SWCD more interesting and will take less time to complete.

Thanks for sharing your point of view, Santiago. How long do you expect to spend on the SWCD certification?

SCWCD doesn't cover anything about the business tier of a web application. For getting jobs in J2EE field, a knowledge about business component development (SCBCD and SCEA) might be necessary.
