I am curious as to what is the most liked text editor to write code in, to compile at the cmd prompt?

I have tried notepad, but I don't like not being able to set tabs. I tried WordPad, but every time I save a .java file (in txt form) it erases any formatting I did to the file.
So when I go back to edit a file the formatting I used is gone.

Is there something I'am missing in these two programs, or is there another I could try?

Thanks

Notepad++ (free) or Ultraedit and TextPad (both non-free) are quite good programmer's editors.

For Windows, Crimson Editor is decent. For Mac, TextWrangler rocks. (Both are free.)

I like Notepad++ as Rob has already suggested, on Windows.

I use Edit plus and that too rocks

What I don't understand is how they changed the earth's orbit to fit the metric calendar. Tiny ad:
