Hi All,

I have around 2 years of experience as a Software Test engineer.I am interested in Java and i have completed SCJP,SCWCD,SCBCD certifications.I am looking for a change from my current work so should i look for opportunities

1) Java Developer with 2 years test exp and 0 Java experience(Doesn't mean that i have zero experience.I have worked on very small java assignments).

(or)

2) Test engineer with knowledge of Java.

Which will be more suitable for my career. What i feel is if i try for Developer position i may get less salary hike because i am applying as a Junior Developer than applying as Test engineer with knowledge in java. I am definitely looking for a profile in which i should have chance to work on Java daily whether it is testing or development and obviously more salary than i am drawing now

Will there be any positions which require a tester to have knowledge in Java EE and EJB.

Regards
Arun

Hi Arun,

Java development and testing are different fields. Both the fields have good opportunities. As you are in the begining of the career , don't look in monetary sense in choosing the next job/kind of work. If you have interest and aptitude for programming you may look for java developement jobs. Try to get expetise in the technology that you are interested.
As per my knowledge Java is used in unit testing of modules and this is done by developers. For positions "testing with java knowledge" you may look job sites

Venkat,

Thanks for your response. What you said seems to be right but having 2 years experience in testing and searching for a Java Developer position in India is almost like a shot in the dark i feel because in India companies look for experience given by the previous employer but not whether candidate has knowledge or not? I think this is not the case in other countries as my friends who worked for testing in first two years of their career moved to SAP development which is almost impossible in India. My present company will never give me chance to do work on Development projects.

I am in a real fix.I don't know where am i heading.

Arun

Are you sure that your friends didn't give up or brought something in the transition? Meaning either (1) started from stratch -- treated as if having zero experience in the new role. Or (2) volunteered for the role? SAP development does require domain knowledge and may be somewhat difficult to fill, so maybe your friend happen to fill a gap.

@ Arun ,

I understand your feeling completely even I am sailing in same boat thinking to move from testing to development . In India its very hard to change from one space to another . You have done enough certifications more than that you have good apatite towards getting into developing . The best thing you can do is in this present market conditions is that try concentrating into areas where in you can use your testing skills as well as apply your Java knowledge likes of unit testing which is primarily done by developers but there will be few projects and companies which follow Agile methodology, try to learn webservices-xml , scripting lanuages likes of Groovy , Ruby.
Bottom line is try to learn the trade and be multi-skilled . Will one day surly live your dream calling as developer .
