I tend to mull topics over in my head and dump them on the page all at once. It suits me but is not very 'journalistic', not that I ever thought I was. Sometimes I come up with the topic and write it to the blog there and then, like sending an email.

Currently I have a few larger pieces that I am writing at the same time and updating as I get time, but my (very real) fear is that I'll run out of time or interest before they get completed. I don't get paid for this, after all.

Personally blogging is about exposing the contents of my mind and people can take of that what they will, it isn't always designed to solve a problem or help others. Sometimes content 'just is'.

Yeah, normally I'd keep a blog only if its a place where I can post my off topic ramblings, thats the way it should be.
I've seen blogs where authors have categorized their posts, so thats a good thing which I am planning to do soon, when I just want to ramble along about any random topic, or something close to my personal experience, I'd put it in my "personal" or "stuff" category...
I'd also want a category to post movie reviews, another category to post about cool stuff and info I stumbled onto at work and so on..

I have been thinking about starting a blog for ages and I believe that when I finally get round to it, I will more or less take your approach. So what if a certain train of thought isn't finished, you can't be creative and perfectly organized at the same time I think.
One thing that bothers me is that I sometimes think for HOURS before I write something, even if it's a simple email to a friend. This drives me crazy. When I finally do start a blog, one of my goals is to be able to write whatever comes to mind, as long as its not too offensive.

I think the main question is the goal for the blog. Once that is established, then things fall into place.

I think it is legitimate to blog "stream of consciousness" but a consequence is perhaps having fewer readers than well-written ideas. And so it goes...

Personally, I have 2 blogs. One for tech stuff and a personal one for the rest of it. It sometimes takes _ages_ to write an entry on the tech one. I don't get paid for it but obviously get some satisfaction from it.

I'm embarrassed to admit how much time is spent on thinking of ideas. Though thankfully I'm a triathlete so I have a lot of time (swimming/biking/running) to think of stuff.... Interestingly, the best ideas come from the swimming.
