connecting to UNIX DB from Windows

I am having application deployed on the windows and i want to connect to database which is present on windows and unix.
so Its ok to connect to DB on windows but can any body suggest me how can i connect to unix.
Please help me solve this problem.

If you are using a type 4 driver the platform hosting the database doesn't matter. JDBC will be unsing some thing like TCP/IP to do it.

Does it mean that if i am using Type4 driver ..i need not to care about the operating system on which that DB is installed.
Please clear it in detail.
