More often i have come across using the term R&D to mean that something has to be looked into. A situation like, I have to plant a new tool/component into my application which needs to be studied before you can go about it.

"You can do R&D on this, and if it is feasible we shall go ahead."

So you want to do R&D in how often people use the term "R&D" ?
I think its usage is more common in India(that too in IT companies).Possibly because we don't find the precise word in specific context??
The term Research and Development is much more than installing and configuring I believe.R&D assumes you know the present work and you are doing the research and later you will develop that.

I really get pissed off, if some one uses that just to mean exploring a tool! And my boss does that too often

When did "R&D" become a verb? In the olden days, "R&D" was used to refer to the engineering department.

I think this is really awful language abuse. Apparently your boss is saying "R&D" to mean "to look into" or "to investigate." At best, that's the "R" par t of R&D, and even then, only in an ironic sense. Reading a manual isn't research!

R&D is a dirty, um, couple words where I work. We don't waste time doing that. We deliver value today, thank you. (choke)

R&D has lost its meaning in software industry.

Anything that you need to work on (may for sometime), firstly you will have a learning period .That is something which is called as R&D.
hmmmm , not cool.

Absolutely Rahul,
It has lost its meaning!!! Anything going thru existing project is termed as R&D. Really R& D need to be defined well.
