I always wear a watch because it's the only piece of jewelry that I recognize. It has to have two faces too, one for local time, and another for Moscow time. That's a part of my identity.

I never wear a watch either. There are plenty of clocks around here. But just in case, I never go out without my quadrant.

You might also look at wearing a watch as a fashion statement.

I used to wear a watch until its battery died. I was too lazy to replace it and got used to checking time in my cell phone and finally gave up on wearing a watch.

I left it at home when I was going on a beach vacation some 15 years ago. Never put it back on after that. And now there are clocks everywhere - computers, cell phones, cars, public places, ...

Years ago a sales guy told me that it was a good idea to wear a watch but never look at it. It hints that you're important and busy enough to need a watch yet the people you talk to feel like the most important thing in your schedule.

I suppose you could set up something to regularly call your cell phone for the same effect. *Ring, Ring* "Oh, sorry about that - I should have turned off my phone. It's the CEO. I can call her back later. You were saying?"

When I do wear a watch, it's of the belt loop variety.

Yea, I rock the cell phone "pocket watch" as well.
Except when I'm out for a run. My cell doesn't have a chrono or a way to track lap time yet.

I overheard a manager mutter angrily one day that it really ticked him off when people meeting in his office looked at their watches. Of course it may have meant he really was that boring but I got in the habit of dropping mine in my pocket on the way to certain meetings.

I wear a watch because when I need to know what "clockwise" means, I look at my wrist to find out. Yeah, it's a digital watch so it doesn't tell me, but I still have to look at my wrist before I know. And I feel silly looking at my wrist to find out what "clockwise" means when I'm not wearing a watch.

That's the funny thing. I love watches, and have quite a few of them (I'm into Puma and Diesel now). It used to be that I couldn't function without a watch. But now I find myself often going without one, and don't really miss it.

When I was about 13-14 years old, my father promised that he will get me a new watch if I clear my exams with good scores. I managed to clear the exam as per the agreement, but my father didn't keep his promise. I said that I will never wear a watch again and I returned the old watch as well. And I didn't wear a watch for another 14-15 years. My father tried to convince me few times, but I refused to wear one. He left it after few years on trying.

Couple of years back, my sister presented me a watch out of her first salary and just because I didn't wanted to hurt her feelings, I started wearing it again. On that day I asked my father why he didn't keep his promise and he said that he didn't have the money to buy one at that time

Thinking of it today, I think my father told the same reason at that time as well but I didn't understand it then. Now I do and I also understand how he would have felt sorry for not able to keep up his promise.

Sorry dad, really

Not wearing one is a fashion statement...

I don't wear a watch either. The last one I had was stolen. That was > 15 years ago and I never got another. There is one case where a watch is useful -- on a long flight. I don't carry a laptop, so I'm time challenged for the duration of the flight, especially when I sleep through part of it.

I also have a friend who doesn't wear one either. He's an amateur weight lifter and can't find one with a wrist band big enough for his tree-trunk sized arms .

Aloha,
Doug

Sure, turn this meaningless conversation into something meaningful. :-D

It just shows us how important it is that as a child we blame our parents for a lot of things, without ever really seeing the whole picture. As children we get shielded by such information, and aren't wise enough to see through the shield.

But I would ask your father, if he knew he didn't have the money at that time, why did he promise that and not some promise that he knew he could keep if you met your end of the bargain.

You don't need to ask my father. I know the reason! When he made that promise he had some reserve money to fulfill the promise. But by the time the exam results came, he had spent it for some other unavoidable emergency reasons. He explained all those things then. All he asked was for another 3 months of time. But at that age, nothing got into my head.

I stopped wearing a watch back when I lived in Arizona - I got tired of always having a band of white skin around my wrist in the summer. Nowadays I just get the time from my computer, or my car, or my cell phone, whichever is convenient. Though I kind of like Bear's belt loop watch; I hadn't seen those before.

imo Wearing a watch is more less like a habit, like smoke.. If you wear them, when you forget it sometimes you really miss it, even can look at your empty wrist. But if you dont wear them you wont be missing much, clocks are everywhere.

From other view, it could be a label of reliability.

My rationale for not wearing a [particular] watch .... is because it looks funny wearing five watches at the same time.

Hmmmm.... I actually have a desire to wear a particular watch less, so I am considering buying another one. Currently, got my eye on an Omega Planet Ocean, which is really cool looking.

I have one of these:

I wear it as a geek fashion item.

It is fun to see people looking at it when they want to know the time and don't wear a watch themselves. For me it is very easy to see what time it is, but most people don't understand it easy.

Cool watch, Peter!

And I might upgrade my two-time-zones to three-time-zones (found on the same site).

I drift in and out of wearing a watch.

A watch really irritates me when I am typing, so I always take it off and leave it on my desk or in my pocket, and often forget to pick it up and put it back on. As I often lose or break them, I refuse to buy expensive watches - For the last half-dozen or so I have spent no more than about GBP 5 each (that's about USD 10). Replacing the whole watch is cheaper than getting a new strap or getting a new battery!

On the other hand I find it cumbersome to use my phone as a clock. In standby mode it has a distinctly low-visibility grey-on-grey display to conserve power. Perhaps if I got a more readable phone I would abandon watches completely. I usually go for six months or a year without a watch after I one gets lost, or the strap breaks, or the battery runs out.

Another watch tip:

Always wear a watch and keep it 15 minutes slow. Whenever you are late for anything you'll have a good excuse.

See what you guys did? Because of this thread, I lost my watch. I had never lost a watch before in my life. I was at the Gym and took the watch off while I was on the treadmill. I put it in the cup holder of the threadmill. When I was done, I went and got changed in the locker room, realized I forgot my watch at the treadmill, and when I got back there, it was gone. And no one turned it in.

I am bummed, maybe I'll join you guys and not where a watch for a while and see how it goes.
