Hi all,

I have 5+ years of experience in Java/J2EE related technologies and i am currently working in an MNC in chennai.

Due to some personal and family reasons, i will be relocating to Singapore in another 2 -3 months.

So, can anyone of you (who is currently working in Singapore), clarify the following please:

1. How is the job market there?

2. What is the normal working hours? (I have heard ppl saying that in Singapore one is expected to work for atleast 12 hrs/day).Is it true?

3. What salary can i expect(given my exp)?

4. Is the background verification(both work-related and studies related) similar to that of India?

5. Finally, what are the living costs there? like how much i will need as a bachelor like for eg. SG$2000 pm etc.

I would be very much thankful if anyone of you from Singapore can help me in this regard.

Please help me friends ! Please

Thanks in advance.

Raghuraman G

Currently Singapore has job openings, however all the jobs require either Citizens of Singapore, or PRs. Sometimes companies asking for Mandarin speaking people. Companies including job consultants are not interested to sponsor employment pass now a days here. The exceptional case is if you have specialized skill set, the chances are more for job. But with normal J2EE skill its almost close to impossible to get a job in Singapore from India.

I will try to answer your questions

1. How is the job market there?
A. Jobs are only for Singaporeans and PRs. EP sponsorship is difficult unless you have specialized skill set.
Take a look at JobsDB, almost all jobs require Singaporeans or PRs.

2. What is the normal working hours? (I have heard ppl saying that in Singapore one is expected to work for atleast 12 hrs/day).Is it true?
A. Dependes on company. However be prepare mentally and physically to work more than 12 hrs a day with no additional pay.

3. What salary can i expect(given my exp)?
A. You can expect 4k. Also depends on how desperate you are willing to come here. I recommend you accept the offer if you get any even with less salary since you are single. Things are getting better.

4. Is the background verification(both work-related and studies related) similar to that of India?
A. If you have genuine education and experience no need to worry. Otherwise, no comments

5. Finally, what are the living costs there? like how much i will need as a bachelor like for eg. SG$2000 pm etc.
A. For bachelor living approximate monthly expenses here,
You can share a room with aircon approax. $500
Food $100
Travel $100
Phone $70-$100
Others depends on your lifestyle.
These are the basics.

Hope this information helps.

Applying for EP means you have a job! EP is like permit to work in Singapore. Without job you cannot get EP.

Hi Raj,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

No ! Currently i am staying with my present job in India only as this is the BEST and SAFEST option as of now because the

US economy still needs to improve and the IT industry also inturn.

I would suggest the same for you too !

Let me know if you need further information

Cheers,

Hi Raj,

I can understand your situation very well. It will be really very disheartening to work in the same company for 5+ years

without any improvement.

But as said earlier, since the market situation is still not that better, we have to stick around in our current job atleast till
the year end

We should be really happy that atleast we are in a better position than others who have been laid off or searching for a job

You can post your updated resume in naukri, monster etc for receiving calls etc

Regarding time for the economy to rebound .. hmm

Sadly, i cant give you any concrete dates in this regard

Let us expect for a better future and things will be back on track.

In the mean time, let us polish our skills and be better equipped when the sun shines again !

Cheers,

Hi Harish,

I have not moved to Singapore and i am considering dropping my plans of relocating abroad for the following reasons.

1. Getting a job now in abroad even in Singapore is becoming increasingly more difficult these days

2. Even if we manged to get a job,i am not sure about the job profile and the salary we can expect.

3. Post recession, companies are increasingly looking to hire candidates with reduced salaries.

Let me know if you need further info.

Regarding consultants, i would personally advise, to be very careful about the terms & conditions.

Cheers,
Raghu

Hi there...

I think things are on right track now. I knew it's a wise decision to chose on.
Does any one have idea on last updates on this. I think market seems good now and boosting day by day in India how about this in S'pore?

I am 5+ exp in Java/J2EE with SCJP, SCWCD, IBM SOA Associate. And have plans to move there down the line in 3-4 months?

Any recommendations from any one here would be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Shashi

As it's booming in India similar is the case in Singapore too. If you looking for a job there then you should first check for companies that you would like to interviewed and then plan your proceedings. I would recommend you to consult some consultants as they would be able be provide a better picture about the industry there and also help you select a company that would suit you the most. They would also help you to get your papers for the job applications done in a proper and a better way. Good luck!

For what it's worth, it seems that the mobile app & game development industry is growing pretty fast in Singapore. Unfortunately, Java qualifications tend to be less relevant in this domain, but it might be worth a shot if you're game (pardon the pun!) to go into this type of software development.

You'll probably see a lot of Java work relating to government / defence-related contracts, but (as noted above) many of these jobs require Singapore citizenship or PR status. I spent the last 3+ years doing this, and in my opinion the work challenge was very interesting and the financial compensation was very good (relative to other software jobs in Singapore).
