Scientists Make Radio Waves Travel Faster Than Light

Friends...what do you say ? can we imagine a day when matter can also travel faster than light ?

Interesting looking technology. Just need to shrink it a bit. At least, get it to fit in the back of a Delorean.

Radio waves and light are merely different frequencies of electromagnetic waves. If you can make radio waves travel faster than the speed of light, then why couldn't you use the same technique to make light travel faster than the speed of light? And if information cannot travel faster than the speed of light (the reporter and the scientist do not contest this), how can radio waves be stripped of all information?

This is awesome.
I have already started working on a remote control.
As everybody knows, sound propagates in the form of waves. If you send the same wave back with a phase shift of 180 degrees, the waves cancel each other because of the interference pattern.

My remote control will have only one button, "mute". Just point it to a person who is noisy, click the button, and presto. He will shut up even before you see the lips move.
I already got a looooong line of hen pecked husbands outside my door, scrambling for the remote.

I thought the current theory was that nothing can cross the speed of light barrier... in other words, things that currently move slower than light will always move slower than light, and things that move faster than light always move faster...

I was reading this and thought it was rather poorly written. For example, it mentions someone called Perez in the very last paragraph, but we're never told who he is or what his role is in the experiment(s). Then I found someone posted this link in the comments section:

http://scienceblogs.com/principles/2009/07/plagiarism_garbling_and_superl.php

Basically, the radio (or light) wave (or particle) still doesn't travel in at a speed greater than the speed of light. What does is the phase velocity, but the phase velocity does not carry any information.

Time travel is still going to take some more work

I've heard of waves traveling faster than light before, but this is due to fast phase velocities and not speed of the actual photons themselves. Nor can matter or information ever travel faster than light. This really doesn't change the fundamentals I'm afraid.

Also, no information or particles are traveling faster than light - it's just the phase velocity. ;)

What about Phase Velocity, does that play into this at all. ;)

I am not a physics major but photons can travel that fast because of zero mass, so to make something faster than them you need lesser than zero which is negative mass, is that meaningful???
I've lost the speed of my thoughts

How can they work out what is faster than light when the exact speed of light has yet to be determined....I thought that the speed of light was determined by some number called 'e' and scientists are constantly getting more accurate calculations of 'e's value...This is like the Java/C++ benchmarks!

According to Google, the speed of light is 299 792 458 m / s.

It's 'c'.

Sort of. Nowadays the meter is defined in terms of the speed of light, since it's such a really well-measured, reliable value. Nonetheless, there may still be future improvements in accuracy of the measurement. But such improvements will actually refine our understanding of the meter, not the speed of light.

Not really. Fred's earlier comment about how the difficulty is crossing the speed of light - that's much more correct. However, while faster-than-light particles might theoretically exist, there's been no evidence seen of them, as far as I know. And it's unclear how they would interact with regular matter, what with the whole time travel problem.

This is why the end of the world will not occur during a lunar eclipse.

Massive particles cannot exceed the speed of light in an absolute vacuum, but in a medium, under specific conditions, matter particles can move faster than the speed of light in that medium. For example electrons can be accelerated beyond the natural speed of light in a dielectric medium, resulting in the emission of Cherenkov radiation.
