I am looking for a laptop in Value-For-Money segment.

Is this a good deal?

Um, I think they fixed that.
I like Dell, but I'm holding off till they release preinstalled Linux in Oz. They may decide not to though

Consider upgrading to 2x2Gb ram, see if there is a faster harddrive. 5400 rpm makes me sad.

Well, what is it for? To go online on the move, or to code or is it for gaming or audio/video editing?

If being online or entertained on the move is your priority, check out the latest ultra-portables Asus eeePc and the like, absolute must have gadgets! Good for emails or to post to your blog etc.

If you are looking for a better mobility you can go for a 9 cell battery.
Also, if you can, try taking Windows XP rather than Vista. Vista sucks bug time.

From my experience, battery life in HP is hopeless and never buy an HP.

Not starting a flame war, but seriously, what's wrong with Vista if you are getting it anyway?

Go for Dell it is quite reliable! I think in India it only ships with MS Vista though! Or you can go for Dell Vostro - without an OS and then install OS of your choice.

Ok, So I will tell my problems(probably it will be a miniscule subset of problems other people have)
  • Very slow (Although I have a 1 GB ram and people say it runs fine on 2 GB)
  • Consumes huge amount of battery (My new laptop battery only lasts 50 mins when i run it on Power saver mode)
  • Explorer crashes every now and then.

I would recommend to get lenovo. Dell is not too bad, my first laptop was Dell Inspiron.I have a HP dv2000 series with 12 Cell battery, 2.2Ghz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 64MB Nvidia card, with Vista Premium, the performance is quite good. I heard HP is offering laptops with slots for 4GB of RAM. For vista I would recommend to have a 256MB Nvidia card instead of the Intel Graphics card.

Vista is slow. I see that internet explorer crashes more often. Firefox works fine in Vista. But even with 2Gb of RAM it is very slow. So I would recommend XP. When you buy a laptop with windows vista, right click on My Computer -> properties -> check for the windows user experience. Anything with overall rating 4.5 and above should be a good buy.

I'm typing this now on a Lenovo thinkpad with Ubuntu.

This is a serious business one, which means its expensive but built to take it. Dual core, separate ATI video, 2GB ram, decent disk. Nice keyboard.

IBM? Two months ago? Lenovo has owned the business for years.

Batteries are a problem for all laptops. I tend to not use the battery much, its more of a movable desktop. Replacing the battery pack is easy, but not cheap.

    More expensive when they explode.
