we did it awhile back: https://coderanch.com/t/41285/md/Nerd-Score but looks like all of the scores are broken there.

I took the test, thinking "let me try... maybe I'll get 60%", as I feel I'm slightly nerdy, but I got this instead:

My wife is right... I'm a hopeless nerd!!

sixty one? We should revoke your posting privs. That is shamefully low.

I expected a 95 or better for me, and when I saw the D&D questions, I was a lock. I started playing D&D back in 78 or so.

What do you consider the difference between geek and nerd? I thought they were symonyms.

Bletch. Arbitrary distinctions, just so they can claim that they (geeks) are better than nerds.

Now I'll agree that 'dork' is meant as a generic insult, far lower down the scale than either nerd or geek.

I got 65/100.
But don't get convinced the way they conclude score. I mean the type of questions they asked(not all the question but some of them).

What scale? Also, where did you get such powerful skills of ( knowing the score aforehand ) I would think you bumped your score from having taught and worked in the field this long. ( knowledge of the subject matter ) Are you actually this fitting of the profile?

Henry and marc are switched from where I had them. Gabriel, I tried to bump one or two questions out of fairness, such as sitting in the back row - well it does not really make a lot of diff ... anyone will sit at differing depths over a few years. Ulf, { } I agree with you - it is probably assimilation of the industry moreso than raw score.

The geek/nerd/dork scale referenced up thread.

The link claims geeks are much better than nerds, and both of them are much better than dorks. I agree that they are both better than dorks, but
I'm not buying their rank of geek vs nerd.

I'm so old, I took classes with Sir Isaac. I have been getting rid of computers in my house, no longer 20 or so, down probably to no more than 10.

I just guessed on the MN element, seems everyone did.

Yea, it was an easy one. Particularly since I have a degree in Chemical Engineering... ... It would have been better if they picked a more common element, but with a lesser known symbol, like "Sn".

BTW, there was one question that I originally refused to answer -- but they wouldn't give me a score otherwise. C'mon, the question was "which one of these isn't a real language", then they proceeded to list only languages which I have used professionally.

Yes, I didn't like that one at all, as well. Its a language, its a real language and its widely used. Professionals make fun of it, but its silly to claim that it is not 'real'

And for a quick and dirty form on Windoze, its hard to beat VisualBasic.

Finally was able to raise the tower, thought I would breeze through this after checking the General C. thread I wanted to stay on top of. As the world turns, I have been driven into ( ... spare me folks, this is M.D. ...)deep, internal review. Skipping the MN question, which I left to more professionally certified respondents ~ I tried to resovle the geek/dork/nerd distinction and got somewhat stuck.

I think of geek as somewhat slender, possibly an ectomorph - then a nerd being an endomorph. I had not really classified dork but figured we could do some work on that as we go along. I agree with the work so far.

Being old does not bracket one as either of contemporary culture or not: There were old hippies in the late 50's. Also, I felt as Henry that their choice of computer linguistic as a potential ranking factor to reveal not informed work.

But 'Windoze' as a variant spelling? Even M$ - I am sure they would not object, they have an eight million dollar yacht. I know this is supposed to be MD - but whenever I have to put that in a discussion I sort of uh,... weasel around it and say "... popular commercial operating systems ..." or just skip out entirely on drawing attention. Fear of Big Bucks.

Does that make me a geek/dork/nerd, or does that make me a Professional Paranoid? You may have fun with me here, I am working on Longest Path in Directed Acyclic Networking and won't be here to defend myself as the uplink is not working at acceptable reliability.

(... folks, note Pat is fluent the matter and citation of 'z' variant spelling is one professional jackin with another ...)

I have to say that my profession BASIC work has nothing to do with VisualBasic. I use to code on Commodore computers -- using a combination of BASIC and 6502 assembly. Back then, that is probably the best option to get anything done.

Today, on Windows, there are so many options for scripting languages, many other languages more popular than Basic, etc., that there is probably no reason to do a project with VisualBasic.
