Hi guys. Some time ago, I had the intention of getting my SCJP cert, but for several reasons I had to stop studying after the first month. Now I'm again interested in taking it, but now a doubt has grown inside me. Should I take the SCJA exam first?

I'm not a complete noob with Java. I'm a CS major and most of the programs I have made through school and professional career were written in Java. My analysis and design skills are fairly good, but some more UML would be nice. So, from what I can tell, I could use some polishing on some of the objectives (e.g. parts of sections 7 and 8 ) tested on JA, but overall the stuff is not new to me.

So, what do you think? Is it worth taking the JA exam first or should I go directly with JP, even when that's gonna take more time and effort to accomplish? What specific advantages/disadvantages you see from doing it first vs skipping JA?

Any comments are appreciated!

Thanks.

Ok ask yourself this. Why do you want to do the SCJA if you can do the SCJP directly? What benefits or advantages would having SCJA first bring you personally or professionally?

When it comes to java knowledge and depth, SCJP cover more or deeper than SCJA. SCJA practically IMO cover like 20-30% of SCJP. However SCJA does test you UML and the other java platforms a bit.

SCJA would be sufficient for project managers that manages a complex project involving Java. If you're going to write a java code SCJP would be much helpful

Ahh. I think I get it now. I guess SCJP is the way to go for the goals I have in mind.

Thanks!
