You can customize the image that's shown during applet loading: http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/plugin/developer_guide/special_attributes.html and you can create an actual splash screen: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/splashscreen.html
