Like a good professional in US, you give a 15 days resignation notice, the boss takes it personally and lets you go that very day!
All of a sudden, he has no requirement for you and can't keep you at work for even a single day, let alone the 15 day notice period.
Is it common for people on contract jobs? I've had only 2 earlier and never faced any thing like that before.
Well, I can use this time to visit San Francisco, but that's not the point.

Some companies do it for security reasons. The idea being that once they know you are leaving, you shouldn't have any access to the system. Most only do that if you are leaving involuntarily though. After all, if you know, you could have caused harm before telling them.

I am not quite sure about US. But I seen similar situations in India that people getting relieved before the notice period. My observation is people can't put 100% efforts if they are notice period. In my experience in some projects it happened that the people on notice period introduced some unknown bugs(not intentional but because of loosing interest after their resignation) which caused us double work.

Employee serving the notice period would not be working the same way as he used to work earlier, this thing is for sure, but if he is a dedicated employee then it is a different thing. The former case holds true in most of the cases, the employee would be just looking forward to somehow complete his notice period. The company in order to avoid such circumstances would opt for such proceedings. Though this would not be the case always with all the companies it does take place in some circumstances.

As the boss would look it this way;
a) Blimey - I need a replacement within 15 days - Gosh - that too .. a smart ar** ... like the one leaving. Better get used to "the departing" NOW and get over
b) Team/Colleagues - need to get used to the new member - Gosh would he/she fit in the team/office.
c) Training - Would he/she need training - need to allocate a mentor/leader to get him/her on fast track.
d) What's/Would.. the impact be on Project schedule. Man hours lost. Reschedule the project plan. Inform the stakeholders/client/whoever
e) Posting/Advertising/Budgeting/Proposals for additional resources.

These are some thoughts that goes in a boss's head.

It's not personal ... its pure business.
It's not.... "no requirement for you"... its sheer requirements for himself/project.
It's not .... "can't keep you at work for even a single day" ..... its sheer ... what to do with a "quitter" (no offence meant)...Why cry over spilled milk.. Next steps?
