Guys,

Ive always held a lot of respect for this website and its leading men/women. It certainly was a great resource to me when I was going for my SCJP and way before that to be honest.

I've created some tutorials aimed specifically at grails developers, in the Groovy forum a few threads from the top is a thread asking where the OP can find grails tutorials. So I created a post letting people know what my tutorials contain and where they can find them. They happen to be on a new forum that I setup, but that is beside the point. I just wanted to contribute and let folks who read the groovy section know there are a set of grails tutorials which I'm working on and where they can be found.

That was not intended to be blatant advertising.

I actually did the right thing last week and actually PM'd David, the mod of the Groovy section and asked if I could specifically create a thread letting people know purely of this grails forum. I never had a reply so I figured it was probably frowned upon and left it at that, I also did say I understand if he would rather I didn't.

I don't personally gain from people reading what I've wrote, except for the reward factor that I'm giving something back to the community.

Dave,

Your request to David found its way to my desk and I gave the green light.

Keep in mind, you are effectively asking if it is okay to advertise for a java forum inside of our java forums. It's like advertising for target inside of a walmart.

I like to think that JavaRanch/CodeRanch is more about knowledge, programming and community than about building an empire/website whatever. So if there is a better resource out there, then I definitely want folks to know about it.

However ... keep in mind that we get big gobs of spam every day. And there are a lot of folks that are up to no good and we are very vigilant about that.

I think that most forums/websites would delete that sort of thing. So I can understand Gregg's position on this. While I am inclined to move the thread back, the part about you feeling cheesed off, cheeses me off. Which makes me dis-inclined to move it back. And, while I don't agree with Gregg's choice on this one occasion, I think Gregg makes lots and lots of good choices, so my inclination is to blindly support him.

So now I'm leaning against moving it back.

I'll make a deal with you. If you edit your post to mellow it out .... downgrade from cheesed off, to ... say ... confused, I'll move the thread.

I feel it is important to say that I checked around and the primary thing in your favor with this is that you have lots of posts and some folks on the staff have reported that they think you're a generally decent guy. I say this because I don't want somebody spamming my forums later with their stuff and pointing to this post saying "you said it was okay for Dave, so therefore ...." --- so I want to continue to give myself license to delete similar stuff in the future willy nilly. For whatever reason I make up, or for no reason at all!

We good?

I didn't reply for two reasons; one I was extremely busy with some family medical issues, and two, I was unable to resolve my ambivalence.

Ultimately, I don't understand why you'd want to start your own forum and advertise it here rather than create the community you desire here: we're already a destination for a lot of things. Why not just add to the list of things we're known to be good at? I don't feel that making Grails an "official" part of the Groovy forum is impossible, nor do I feel the traffic would be overwhelming (I think it'll always be less than, say, the Struts traffic).

I love a good mentalist. And so does this tiny ad:
