It's hard to tell what's going on because of the poor indentation of the code, but you are using a some dodgy addressing of elements there.

I highly recommend assigning id values to your elements and using document.getElementById() to address them.

Also, install Firebug for Firefox and do some script debugging.

And if you really want to make this sort of thing easy, look into jQuery. Life is too short to write raw JavaScript.

Thanks Sheriff.

I'm new to this so could you tell me what I need to know if I need to become a Web developer. There are lots of technologies and platforms out there.

If you want to be a Web devo, you are going to need to learn lots of technologies. That's one of the challenges, and to me, most of the fun, of working with web apps.

On the client side, you'll need a thorough understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Once you have a good grasp of JavaScript fundamentals, adopt a library that will make it much easier and cross-browser (I obviously prefer jQuery).

And don't underestimate HTML. Everyone thinks it's easy and doesn't need a lot of attention, but it's kind of like chess. You can learn the HTML tags in an hour, but it takes a long time and a lot of practice to learn to use it well -- especially in conjunction with CSS and scripting.

And then there's the whole pool of server-side technologies...
