What would be the "suggested" part time salary for a software engineer in India right now. I understand that it has gone down since 2006, am I correct? What is the pay scale compared to number of years of experience.

Thanks!

Well its hard to say. What experience level are you looking for ? What technology is it ? Do you want the engineer to code / test / do documentation / deploy etc or just code ? Do you have a specific budget ?

Also, I find that the experience : salary ratio can often be misleading. But that rant should be saved for the future

Thank you for answering:-)

Well we would need about 2 yrs experience with C code, some testing, documentation and some customer service functions. Embedded projects only. The person will be working from home, all is done via the net, e-mails etc. The position is permanent, and will most definitely be turned into a full time position in the future (more software development tasks).

Thats the simple outline.

I think that it is very difficult to determine such a part time salary. I wouldn't want to either pay too, and but definitely not too little.

You mean you want to hire someone as a contractor and then shift them to full time employment somewhere down the line right ?

With the skillset described below, a full time employee working 8~9 hours a day can ask anywhere from 300,000 ~ 500,000 Indian Rupees. Top end developers can ask for more, but it really depends on the skill set that you want to hire. Is the conversion below correct ?

300,000 Indian Rupee = 36,686.1 Danish Krone
500,000 Indian Rupee = 61,143.5 Danish Krone

You might be able to get someone to work for less / more but you usually get what you pay for.

Also - Internet penetration in certain parts is not great. Where there is good internet - broadband speeds are decent and accessing a remote desktop should be tolerable.

Are you specific about the 2 years of experience or is that a rule of thumb ? What sort of interview questions do you want the candidate to be able to answer ?

I see.

For now it will be a part time position, because we do have other people working on the same projects. But in the future we will be needing some more work done on the software development side of things. This also depends on the job candidate of course. So maybe we are looking for a freelancer, working about 80 to 120 hrs per month.

So for a part time salary, would I just cut the figures you gave me in half? So between 150.000 and 250.000 or more per month?
And yes, your currency calculations seems to be "right on the money"!! :-)
There seem to be a very BIG difference between 300.000 and 500.000 Rupee. Would the 300.000 be the salary of a Fresher then? Are you talking per month?

Do any of you know of a good job site where I could post my job ad in INDIA? I am looking for a serious site.

Some of our requirements would be:
C programming, embedded software, some LINUX, coding display drivers, software development, software documentation, interface design knowledge, VERY GOOD English, especially in writing, customer understanding and self discipline (very important). The personal relationship is very important to us also, we would like to be able to communicate freely, and have some fun with each other too.

No, the two years are not set in stone, we just need someone who knows what they are doing, as they will be working by themselves in India.

Do you think that the internet connection could be a serious problem? This is very important to us.

I must say that, having been following your forum for a while, you all sound like very competent to me.

Thank you for answering my question.

The salary he has mentioned is for per annum, but in india people will expect to know appraisal ratio's and job security.

I think your requirement will most fit for freelance sites such as oDesk, freelance.com, etc, search indian programmers there you will get easily.

thanks
sakthi
