Java has a network api where you can put together a simple server using the server socket class. My question is do you just need an active jvm to run it? How do you go about finding a host for something like that? You would not use servlets and tomcat because it is a server already right?
there are many ways to build client-server-applications and there are a lot of client-server-applications. As always it depends... You should ask yourself what you want to do with this application. Are there any restrictions regarding the server or client side? Or would you provide the client and the server? What kind of information do you plan to exchange between client and server? Etc.....
Of course you can build a server application with the Java socket API. Tomcat is a Servlet container designed to handle Java based web applications. But in the end it acts as a socket based server too.
