John,
Welcome to JavaRanch!

Your question is a bit vague. What are you looking for - advice on how to learn Java, get an entry level job, etc. What do you know/have you done so far?

the typical pattern i have observed is
1) Get basic qualifications
2) Get basic Certifications
3) Get an entry level job
4) Get good projects
5) Get higher certifications
6) Get higher qualifications
7) Get better projects
8) Get even higher certifications
9) Get managerial positions (This is where you quit java and become a manager of java)
10) Leave everything and join some cult

you may reverse the order.

I too would like to know, but rather than just "enter", I'd go with "re-enter"

I did all of the first 3 steps Gaurav mentions (and maybe 4), then I quitted the job, moved to another country and
stayed away from jobs for 3 years for personal reasons, did a master too during some of that time.

Now I want to get back to Java and I find it nearly impossible,
I've been looking, applying, going to interviews for the past 6 months, nothing.

guys theres no 1 algorithm to do this.... every1 has his own story.... its more fun to make yours unique.... and that too in front of future prospective employers....
i kno ppl who did phd... post doc and entered java as entry level programmers... i kno others who worked their ass off aat dead end 9-6 jobs... but still managed to get good projects for their resume

some others did something else....
its all about how you write your own story

Thanks for the answer, I know that's not the "definitive algorithm", just saying what I did,

Got my Computer Science degree, got an entry job, got certified while in the job (SCJP), quitted the job after a year.
Moved to another country, stayed without a job for 3 years (from which 1 was spent in an MBA)
Now I find it nearly impossible to find a job, countless applications and interviews for the last 6 months, and it is entry jobs that I'm applying for.

Hi,

1) Get basic qualifications
2) Get basic Certifications
3) Get an entry level job
4) Get good projects
5) Get higher certifications
6) Get higher qualifications
7) Get better projects
8) Get even higher certifications
9) Get managerial positions (This is where you quit java and become a manager of java)
10) Leave everything and join some cult

In my case

1) Get basic Certification - cracked SCJP 1.5 in 3rd Sem MCA
2) Get entry level job - secured placment in 5 MNC before completion of MCA
3) Get basic qualification -Finished master of computer applications
4) Got kicked off from java as I was offered some other skill to work on (SAP basis)...
5) Got kicked off from company ( In may 2009 due to recession)
6) Got job as Tech support analyst at call center(worked for 4 months) and also searched for java based job
7) Got a job in local company based out in hydereabad as java developer
8) Got some exp. on web based projects and did Coding and Unit test of telecom projects
9) Kicked the local company and joined a big telecom product dev. company after 8 months
10) Now working on extremely challenging projects based on Core Java/EJB...

thats my story...
