Moving from QA to Development

I've been working in QA for a number of years now and now I am looking for a career change, my current company is willing to train me up as a java developer. I have been learning java on my own for the past six months and I have a good grasp of java. My company doesn't have a formal training programme but I want to put somethig together myself so I can measure my progress and ensure I am getting exposure to the right things. Has anyone been in the same position and can advise me what my aims should be in the first 3/6 months?
